Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, " Flywheel - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Support the engine with blocks or a suitable lifting device.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (1). The weight of flywheel housing (1) is approximately 62 kg (137 lb).

  1. Remove bolts (3) .

  1. Remove flywheel housing (1) from the dowel pins.

  1. Remove O-ring seal (2) from the crankshaft rear seal carrier.

  1. Apply Tooling (A) to O-ring seal (2). Install O-ring seal (2) on the crankshaft rear seal carrier.

  1. Apply Tooling (B) to the face of the cylinder block.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (1). The weight of flywheel housing (1) is approximately 62 kg (137 lb).

  1. Position flywheel housing (1) on the dowel pins.

  1. Install bolts (3) .

End By: Install the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, " Flywheel - Install".
