Installation of the Upper Hitch Bearing

  1. Before assembly, lubricate seal (7) with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease .

  1. Apply 4C-5598 High Temperature Anti-Seize to the bore of upper cap (8). Install seal (7) into upper cap (8) .

  1. Lubricate seal (9) with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease .

  1. Apply 4C-5598 High Temperature Anti-Seize to the bore of lower cap (10). Install seal (9) into lower cap (10) .

  1. Coat the bore of the upper hitch with 4C-5598 Anti-Seize Compound .

  1. Place lower cap (10) in position.

  1. Install the three bolts (11) with 120 ° of spacing.

  1. Cool bearing cups (12) and (13) to a temperature of -50° ± 5°C (-58.0° ± 9.0°F).

  1. Install bearing cup (13) so that bearing cup (13) contacts the lower cap.

  1. Completely coat bearing cones (14) and (15) with oil.

  1. Install bearing cones (14) and (15) .

  1. Install bearing cup (12) so that bearing cones (14) and (15) make contact.

  1. Remove three bolts (11) and lower cap (10) .

  1. Install 2 mm (0.08 inch) of shims (3) .

  1. Install upper cap (8) and lower cap (10). Install the three bolts with (11) 120 ° of spacing.

  1. Use the 1P-0495 Drive Plate with the proper nut and the proper bolt to check the rolling torques of the two bearings.

  1. Add or remove shims (3) until the rolling torque of each bearing is between 2.8 N·m (25 lb in) and 11.2 N·m (99 lb in).

  1. Install the remaining three bolts (11) .

  1. Install spacer (16) .

  1. Drop pin (1) into the bore of the upper hitch.

  1. Install plate (17) and two bolts (18) in the plate. Install the bolts with 180 ° of spacing.

  1. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the flange of pin (1) and the top of the hitch.

  1. Remove plate (17) and two bolts (18) .

  1. Install two sets of shims (2) with equal thickness, so that you fill the gap.

  1. Install six bolts (19) .

  1. Measure the gap between the bottom of pin (1) and the bottom of the hitch.

  1. Install shims (4) with a thickness that is 0.25 mm (0.01 inch) less than the measured gap.

  1. Install plate (17) and four bolts (18) .

  1. Before assembly, lubricate seal (20) with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease .

  1. Apply 4C-5598 High Temperature Anti-Seize to the bore of the upper cap (21). Install seal (20) into upper cap (21) .

  1. Lubricate seal (22) with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease .

  1. Apply 4C-5598 High Temperature Anti-Seize to the bore of the lower cap (23). Install seal (22) into lower cap (23) .

  1. Coat the bore of the lower hitch with 4C-5598 High Temperature Anti-Seize .

  1. Place lower cap (23) in position.

  1. Install the three bolts (24) with 120 ° of spacing.

  1. Cool bearing cups (25) and (26) to a temperature of -50° ± 5°C (-58.0° ± 9.0°F).

  1. Install bearing cup (26) so that bearing cup (26) contacts the lower cap.

  1. Completely coat bearing cones (27) and (28) with oil.

  1. Install bearing cones (27) and (28) .

  1. Install bearing cup (25) so that bearing cones (27) and (28) make contact.

  1. Remove three bolts (24) and lower cap (23) .

  1. Install 1.5 mm (0.06 inch) of shims (6) .

  1. Install upper cap (21) and lower cap (23). Then, install the three bolts (24) with 120 ° of spacing.

  1. Use the 1P-0481 Drive Plate with the proper nut and the proper bolt to check the rolling torques of the two bearings.

  1. Add or remove shims (6) until the rolling torque of each bearing is between 1.7 N·m (15 lb in) and 5.6 N·m (50 lb in).

  1. Install the remaining three bolts (24) .

  1. Drop hitch pin (5) into the bore of the lower hitch.

  1. Install bolt (29) .
