Schematic of the Grapple Solenoid Return Relay

(1) Grapple solenoid return relay. (2) Power train Electronic Control Module (ECM).

The CID 0417 FMI 07 diagnostic code is recorded when the power train Electronic Control Module (ECM) is unable to operate the grapple solenoid return relay. The grapple solenoid return relay is located in the compartment behind the right side door of the machine.

Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code CID 0417 FMI 07 for the relay is active. Before you perform the following procedure, refer to Table 1 in order to determine the contacts on the connector and the wire numbers that correspond to the fault.

Table 1
Information on the Grapple Solenoid Return Relay
Fault     Connector Contact No. (1)     Wire No.
Grapple Solenoid Return Relay     J1-7 and J2-13     921-WH and C903-BU
( 1 ) Connector contact of the power train ECM.

Note: Connector J1 contact 7 (wire 921-WH) and connector J2 contact 13 (wire C903-BU) of the power train ECM are the contacts for the graple solenoid return relay. All solenoid return lines are joined together. The lines connect to contact 87a on grapple solenoid return relay (1) (wire K927-BU).

  1. Check for an open coil on the relay.

    1. Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

    1. Disconnect the machine harness from the grapple solenoid return relay.

    1. At the connector of the relay, measure the resistance of the coil between contact 85 (wire 921-WH) and contact 86 (wire C903-BU).

Expected Result: The resistance should be approximately 360 Ohms.

      Results:

      • OK - The relay resistance is correct. Go to Step 2.

      • NOT OK - The relay has failed. Replace the relay. STOP.

  1. Check the ground circuit of the machine harness.

    1. The key start switch and the battery disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. The machine harness remains disconnected from grapple solenoid return relay (1) .

    1. Disconnect the connector J1 from power train ECM (2) .

    1. At the machine harness connector of the grapple solenoid return relay, check for continuity between contact 2 (wire 921-WH) and connector J1 contact 7.

      Expected Result: There is continuity.

      Results:

      • OK - There is continuity. The ground circuit of the relay is correct in the machine harness. Proceed to Step 3.

      • NOT OK - There is no continuity. The machine harness is faulty. Wire 921-WH is open in the machine harness. Replace the machine harness or repair the machine harness. STOP.

  1. Check the continuity of the machine harness to the grapple solenoid return relay.

    1. The key start switch and the battery disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. Reconnect the machine harness to the grapple solenoid return relay.

    1. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the power train ECM.

    1. At the machine harness connectors, measure the resistance between connector J1 contact 7 (wire 921-WH) and connector J2 contact 13 (wire C903-BU).

Expected Result: The resistance should measure 360 Ohms.

      Results:

      • OK - Resistance measures 360 Ohms. The harness of the relay is correct. Proceed to Step 4.

      • NOT OK - The resistance is not 360 Ohms. Wire 921-WH or wire C903-BU is open in the machine harness. Replace the machine harness or repair the machine harness. STOP.

  1. Check if the fault is still present.

    1. The key start switch and the battery disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.

    1. Connect all harness connectors.

    1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.

    1. Start the engine.

    1. Enter the service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Clear all inactive faults.

    1. Attempt to operate the machine.

    1. Stop the machine.

    1. Check for the CID 0417 FMI 07 diagnostic code for the relay.

Expected Result: The CID 0417 FMI 07 diagnostic code for the relay is active. The "SERV CODE" is showing in the display.

      Results:

      • YES - The fault has not been corrected. It is unlikely that the power train ECM is faulty. Replace grapple solenoid return relay (1). Perform the previous steps again. If the cause of the fault is not found, replace the power train Electronic Control Module (ECM). Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (Power Train) - Replace" for information on replacing the power train ECM. STOP.

      • NO - Fault is NOT active. The fault does not exist at this time. The initial fault was probably caused by a poor electrical connection. Resume normal machine operation.
