Start By:
- Remove the front track roller frames. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Track Roller Frame - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.
Personal injury or death can result from a compressed recoil spring being released suddenly using incorrect disassembly procedures. A recoil spring that is still held in compression can result in the recoil spring being released unexpectedly with extreme force which could cause serious injury or death. Make sure that the correct disassembly procedure is used, if a front track roller frame that has a crack in the parent metal or weld connection (or a tubular section that has separated from the front of the frame assembly) when the recoil spring is still held in compression. Refer to Special Instruction, SMHS8273 which contains the disassembly procedure that must be used to decrease the possibility of injury while performing service on the track roller frame. |
Use only the tooling and cylinder listed in this procedure. Do not use other cylinders because they can cause enough force to break the tension rods. This can result in personal injury or death. |
- Remove the bolts that hold retainers (2) in place and remove the retainers from the front track roller frame.

- Loosen valves (4) on the track adjuster. Put track adjuster (3) in the front track roller frame (1) .
- Install Tooling (A) in order to remove the recoil springs in the following manner.
- Install FT-1896 Studs (11) in front track roller frame (1), as shown.
- Install the 8B-7548 Push-Puller Tool Group (7). Install the 3H-0465 Push-Puller Plate (9) in position on the studs.
- Install 8S-5578 Spacers (8). Install the 2M-0849 Hard Washer (6). Install the 1D-4719 Full Nut (5) on the end of the studs. Adjust nuts (5) until the nuts are of equal distance from the surface of the track roller frame.
- Connect the 6V-9061 Manual Pump to 1P-820 Hydraulic Puller (10) .
Note: Make sure that the pressure line from the 9U-6600 Hand Hydraulic Pump to the 1P-0820 Hydraulic Puller is connected through a 1S-8937 Needle Valve. This needle valve will allow the pressure to be controlled in order to gradually release the recoil spring.
- Put 1P-820 Hydraulic Puller Group (10) into position, as shown. Extend the puller until the puller makes contact with the track adjuster. The FT-1986 Studs (11) must be parallel after the puller group has been installed.
- Use only enough pressure to extend the puller sufficiently in order to compress the recoil spring. Compress the recoil spring until the recoil spring retainer can be turned. Close the 1S-8937 Valve. Switch the valve to the RETRACT position.
Show/hide tableThe recoil spring retainer must never be more than 12.7 mm (.50 inch) away from the recoil spring while the recoil spring is removed. Make sure the pressure on the pressure gauge decreases during all the steps of the next operation. If there is a sudden decrease of pressure before the recoil spring retainer is approximately 325 mm (12.79 inch) outside the roller frame, the spring and guide assembly has not released correctly. Do not remove the recoil spring retainer at this time. Personal injury can be the result. Contact a Caterpillar dealer for further instructions.
- Use Tooling (B) and turn the recoil spring retainer (12) counterclockwise. This will move the recoil spring retainer out of the roller frame 12.7 mm (.500 inch). Slowly release the cylinder pressure through the 1S-8937 Valve. Allow the recoil spring to extend 12.7 mm (.500 inch). This is measured on the puller. When the puller retracts 12.7 mm (.500 inch) close the 1S-8937 Valve .
- Turn the spring retainer (12) outward for 12.7 mm (.500 inch). Slowly release the pressure with the 1S-8937 Valve. This will retract the puller. Close the 1S-8937 Valve. Do this procedure until the puller is 6.4 mm (.250 inch) from the fully retracted position.
- When the puller group is near the fully retracted position, turn recoil spring retainer (12) clockwise in order to hold the recoil spring and remove the force away from the puller group. Retract the puller group.

- Install Tooling (C) in order to remove the recoil spring in the following manner.
- Install 8S-3168 Spacers (13). Install 2M-0849 Washers (6). Install the 1D-4719 Nuts (5) onto studs (11). Adjust nuts (5) until the nuts are of equal distance from the surface of front track roller frame (1) .
- Extend 1P-820 Hydraulic Puller Group (10) until hydraulic puller group (10) makes contact with the track adjuster.
- Use only enough pressure to extend the puller group sufficiently in order to compress the recoil spring. Compress the recoil spring until the recoil spring retainer can be turned. Close the 1S-8937 Valve and turn the pump valve to the RETRACT position.
- Use Tooling (B) and turn the recoil spring retainer (12) counterclockwise in order to move the recoil spring retainer out of the roller frame 12.7 mm (.500 inch). Slowly release the cylinder pressure through the 1S-8937 Valve and allow the recoil spring to extend 12.7 mm (.500 inch). This is measured on the puller group. When the puller group retracts 12.7 mm (.500 inch) close the 1S-8937 Valve .
- Turn the spring retainer (12) outward for an additional 12.7 mm (.500 inch). Slowly release the cylinder pressure through the 1S-8937 Valve. This will retract the puller. Close the 1S-8937 Valve. Do this procedure until the puller group is 6.4 mm (.250 inch) from being fully retracted.
- When the puller group is near the fully retracted position, turn recoil spring retainer (12) clockwise in order to hold the recoil spring and remove the force away from the puller group. Retract the puller group.

Note: Tooling (A) and Tooling (C) are similar except for both 8S-5578 Spacers (8) and 8S-3168 Spacers (13) .
- Install Tooling (D) in order to remove the recoil spring in the following manner.
- Install 2M-0849 Washers (6). Install 1D-4719 Nuts (5) on studs (11). Adjust nuts (5) until the nuts are of equal distance from the surface of front track roller frame (1) .
- Extend hydraulic puller group (10) until hydraulic puller group (10) makes contact with the track adjuster.
- Use only enough pressure to extend the puller group sufficiently in order to compress the recoil spring. Compress the recoil spring until the recoil spring retainer can be turned. Close the 1S-8937 Valve and turn the pump valve to the RETRACT position.
- Use Tooling (B) and turn recoil spring retainer (12) counterclockwise in order to move the recoil spring retainer out of the roller frame 12.7 mm (.500 inch). Slowly release the cylinder pressure through the 1S-8937 Valve. Allow the recoil spring to extend 12.7 mm (.500 inch). This is measured on the puller group. When the puller group retracts 12.7 mm (.500 inch), close the 1S-8937 Valve .
- Turn recoil spring retainer (12) outward while the puller is retracted in 12.7 mm (.500 inch) steps. Do this step until the force of the recoil spring is completely released.
