  1. Fasten a hoist to recoil spring (4). Put the recoil spring into position in front track roller frame (3) .

  1. Put plate (2) into position in the front track roller frame and install recoil spring retainer (1). Install the retainer as far as possible with Tooling (A) .

    Illustration 2g00557252

Note: For the correct assembly of Tooling (B), see Disassembly and Assembly, "Recoil Spring - Remove".

  1. Install Tooling (B) on the front track roller frame, as shown. Adjust 1D-4719 Full Nuts (5) until the nuts are of equal distance from the surface of front track roller frame (1) .

  1. Install the recoil spring in the following manner.

      ------ WARNING! ------

The recoil spring retainer must never be more than 12.7 mm (.50 inch) away from the recoil spring while the recoil spring is removed. Make sure the pressure on the pressure gauge decreases during all the steps of the next operation. If there is a sudden decrease of pressure before the recoil spring retainer is approximately 325 mm (12.79 inch) outside the roller frame, the spring and guide assembly has not released correctly. Do not remove the recoil spring retainer at this time. Personal injury can be the result. Contact a Caterpillar dealer for further instructions.

      ----------------------

    1. Slowly extend puller assembly (6) in order to compress the recoil spring while recoil spring retainer (1) is installed with Tooling (A) .

    1. When the puller group has been completely extended, hold the recoil spring in position with the recoil spring retainer.

    1. Retract the puller group.

Note: Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) are similar except for 8S-3168 Spacers (9) .

  1. Install Tooling (C) and install the recoil spring in the following manner.

    1. Remove 1D-4719 Full Nuts (5) and remove 2M-0849 Hard Washers (8) .

    1. Install 8S-3168 Spacers (9). Install 2M-0849 Hard Washers (8). Install 1D-4719 Full Nuts (5) onto studs (7). Adjust the nuts until the nuts are of equal distance from the surface of the track roller frame.

    1. Extend puller group (6) slowly in order to compress the recoil spring while the recoil spring retainer is installed with Tooling (A) .

    1. When the puller group has been completely extended, hold the recoil spring in position with recoil spring retainer (1) .

    1. Retract the puller group.

Note: Tooling (C) and Tooling (D) are similar except for both 8S-3168 Spacers (9) and 8S-5578 Spacers (10) .

  1. Install Tooling (D) and install the recoil spring in the following manner.

    1. Remove 1D-4719 Full Nuts (5). Remove 2M-0849 Hard Washers (8) and remove 8S-3168 Spacers (9) from studs (7) .

    1. Install 8S-5578 Spacers (10). Install 2M-0849 Hard Washers (8), and install 1D-4719 Full Nuts (5) onto studs (7). Adjust nuts (5) until the nuts are of equal distance from the surface of front track roller frame (3) .

    1. Extend puller group (6) slowly in order to compress the recoil spring while recoil spring retainer (1) is installed with Tooling (A) .

    1. Install spring retainer (1). The spring retainer must be fully seated in frame (3). The distance from the surface of the front track roller frame and the end of the recoil spring retainer should be 3.1 mm (.120 inch) to 9.6 mm (.380 inch) when the recoil spring retainer is installed.

    1. Turn spring retainer (1) counterclockwise. Turn the retainer until the spring retainer is fully seated.

    1. Remove Tooling (D) from front track roller frame (3) .

  1. Install two retainers (11), as shown.

End By: Install the front track roller frames. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Track Roller Frame - Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
