The Procedure for the Removal of the Electronic Unit Injector has Changed {1290}

A change in the removal procedure of the Electronic Unit Injector has occurred in order to improve product reliability.

Remove the rocker shaft and the pushrods. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove pressure plug (1) from the fuel manifold.

  1. Drain the fuel from the cylinder head assembly into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

  1. Mark bridge assemblies (2) and the unit injectors (3) for reference during installation.

  1. Loosen nuts and remove cap assembly from unit injector (3) .

  1. Remove bolt (4) and spacer assembly (5) that holds the unit injector (3) in place.

  1. Inspect the hold-down assembly.

  1. If the bolt is NOT loose during disassembly, then use Tooling (A) to pry beneath the base and free the electronic unit injector (2) .

  1. Remove the electronic unit injector (2) from the cylinder head.

  1. If the hold-down bolt IS loose during disassembly, inspect the following:

  • Inspect the injector bore for debris.

  • Inspect the injector bore for wear.

  • Replace the clamp and replace the spacer.

Note: In ALL instances, replace the fuel injector hold-down bolt with a NEW bolt.
