New Gasket For The Cylinder Block Cover {1201}

Usage:

G3606 3XF
Engine:
3606 (S/N: 8RB1-UP)
3608 (S/N: 6MC1-UP; 5PG1-UP)
G3606 (S/N: 3XF1-UP; 4ZS1-UP)
G3608 (S/N: 4WF1-UP; BEN1-UP)

Description of Change: A new gasket is being used for 3600 in-line engines, both gas and diesel. The new gasket has more gasket surface near the bolt hole in order to compensate for misaligned conditions.

Adaptable To: The new 241-3284 Gasket is a direct replacement for the cancelled 9Y-7084 Gasket. The new 241-3284 Gasket is acceptable as a replacement for the 9Y-7084 Gasket on all 3606, 3608, G3606, and G3608 Engines.

To ensure that the 241-3284 Gasket does not leak, use the following installation procedure:

Illustration 1g01033648

Illustration 2g01033649

  1. Drain the engine coolant to a level that is below the cylinder block covers.

  1. Remove the cylinder block cover and the 9Y-7084 Gasket. Discard the bolts, the washers, and the clips.

  1. Clean the surfaces of the cylinder block and the surfaces of the cylinder block cover. Remove any debris and any traces of the 9Y-7084 Gasket .

Note: "INSIDE" is etched or stamped on the inside surface of the cylinder block cover. Ensure that the surface marked "INSIDE" faces the cylinder block during the installation of the cylinder block cover.

  1. Install a new 241-3284 Gasket and the cylinder block cover with 1A-2029 Bolts and 3V-3308 Washers. Install the two bolts (X). See illustration 1. Tighten the bolts by hand for several turns in order to support the cylinder block cover.

  1. Replace any of the discarded clips that are listed above with 4P-7581 Clips and 9X-6772 Cable Straps. A longer 0S-1588 Bolt is required for use with the 4P-7581 Clips .

  1. Install the nine bolts that are located below the bolts (X). Tighten the bolts by hand.

  1. Align the cylinder block cover with the 241-3284 Gasket and with the tapped holes that are in the cylinder block. See illustration 2.

  1. Tighten the two bolts (X). This will maintain the correct alignment between the cylinder block cover and the 241-3284 Gasket .

  1. Install the three bolts that remain.

  1. Tighten all of the bolts in a crisscross sequence to the correct standard torque.
Table 1 lists the effective serial numbers for this change.
