Start By:
- Remove the pistons and the connecting rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Pistons and Connecting Rods - Remove".
Note: Prior to removal from the engine, the pistons and connecting rod assemblies were marked. The components must be reassembled together. The components must be installed in the original location in the engine. Do not interchange any of the components.
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Use Tooling (B) in order to remove retaining rings (5) from piston skirt (7). Remove piston pin (9) from the piston skirt.
- Remove piston skirt (7) and piston crown (1) from connecting rod (10).
- Inspect bearings (6) in the piston crown (1).
Note: The piston crown assembly must be replaced if bearings (6) are worn or damaged. Bearings (2) are nonserviceable.
- Check the clearance between the ends of the piston rings. Refer to the Specifications Manual, "Pistons and Rings" topic.
- Use Tooling (A) to remove top piston ring (2), intermediate piston ring (3), and oil control ring (4) from piston crown (1).
- Inspect the piston ring grooves. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting Manual, "Piston Ring Groove - Inspect" topic.
- Remove the upper half of connecting rod bearing (12) from connecting rod (10).
- Remove the lower half of connecting rod bearing (13) from connecting rod cap (11).
- Inspect bearing (8) in connecting rod (10).

Note: This engine has fractured connecting rods. Fractured connecting rods must be handled with care. Use a soft jawed vise to hold the connecting rod when loosening the connecting rod cap bolts. Do not place the fractured faces of the connecting rod cap on any surface. The connecting rod cap must be laid flat on the side in order to prevent damage to the fractured faces of the connecting rod cap.
