A New Integral Seal Provides Improved Sealing for Aluminum Oil Pans {1302}

Usage:

3412 38S
Industrial Engines:
3412C (S/N: 38S1-UP)
3412E (S/N: BAX1-UP; 4CR1-UP; BDT1-UP)
Marine Engines:
3412C (S/N: 3JK1-UP; 7BL1-UP)
3412E (S/N: 9KS1-UP; 9PW1-UP)
C30 (S/N: CLX1-UP)

Description of Change: A new integral seal has been introduced for 3412 marine engines and industrial engines that are equipped with aluminum oil pans. The new seal will help to prevent oil leaks that occur at the engine oil pan's gasket joint.

Note: Do not attempt to use this seal group for applications that do not have an aluminum oil pan. The mounting bolts that are used for oil pans that are made from steel will not accommodate the increased thickness of the new seal.

Adaptable To: The new 236-1525 Integral Seal directly replaces the 4N-1151 Gasket and the 6N-1396 Oil Pan Gasket for the applications mentioned above.

The new seal is effective with the 3412 (S/N: 7BL405-UP; 9KS2053-UP) and the C30 (S/N: CLX543-UP).

This new seal is adaptable to the 3412 (S/N: BAX1-UP; 4CR1-UP; BDT1-UP; 3JK1-UP; 9PW1-UP; 38S1-UP) engines that are equipped with an aluminum oil pan.

Installation Procedure

Note: Do not attempt to use this seal group for applications that do not have an aluminum oil pan. The mounting bolts that are used for oil pans that are made from steel will not accommodate the increased thickness of the new seal.

The following procedure should be used during the installation of the seal:

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and cylinder block. Remove all gasket material and old sealant from the mating surfaces. Ensure that you do not scratch the mating surfaces or gouge the mating surfaces of the oil pan or the cylinder block.

  1. Inspect the cylinder block oil pan flange for excessive sealant at the housing joints. Remove any excessive sealant from the area at the gasket joint for the front housing, and the area at the gasket joint for the flywheel housing.

  1. Use a shop towel and a suitable solvent in order to remove engine oil and grit from the mounting surfaces. The surfaces should be clean and dry prior to installing the new seal.

  1. Apply a bead of 4C-9612 Silicone Sealant to the cylinder block oil pan flange in the location of the joint for the front housing, and in the location of the joint for the flywheel housing. Ensure that the joints are completely filled with sealant.

  1. Dry fit the seal on the oil pan's sealing flange. Mark the locations of the seal's joints (1) on the oil pan's flange. After marking the joint locations, remove the seal. Apply a bead of 4C-9612 Silicone Sealant across the width of the flange at the location of the seal joints. Ensure that you apply enough sealant to this area of the flange in order to fill the gap that is in the sealing joint.

  1. Install the four segments of the integral seal into place on the oil pan's sealing flange.

  1. Apply a bead of 4C-9612 Silicone Sealant across the width of the gasket at each of the sealing joints (1). Spread the sealant into the joints of the seal. Ensure that you fill any gaps that may be present in the joints of the seal.

  1. Position the oil pan onto the engine. Install the bolts into the oil pan and tighten the bolts finger tight. Torque the bolts to the following value.

    Torque for bolts ... 47 ± 9 N·m (35 ± 7 lb ft)
