The FT1566 Valve Spring Compressor is available for use on the Winona Van Norman head bench. This tool is used to compress (push together) pneumatically the valve springs to remove and install the valves.
Make sure that cylinder heads are clean when you put them on the Winona head bench. Remove grease and debris from cylinder heads. Dirty cylinder heads will make the bench dirty. This will have an effect on the operation of the air pallet.
The arm attachment of the spring compressor has two pivot joints. This permits the operator to compress several valve springs before he needs to move the cylinder head. At the end of the arm is a 50 mm (2") air cylinder with a 152 mm (6") stroke. It has 1245 N (280 lb) of force with shop air at 620 kPa (90 psi). A three-position, lever-activated valve controls the up and down movement of the cylinder rod. The operator can adjust rod speed in either direction.
In the drawing of the spring compressor there are instructions for building two units. One unit has a short column. It is designed to be attached to a work bench in the area where you disassemble cylinder heads. The other unit has a longer column. It is designed to be attached to the rear right corner of the main table on the Winona Van Norman head bench.
FT1566 Valve Spring Compressor retainer adapters shown on the print are designed to fit all Caterpillar Engines.
