A check valve may need to be relocated in the axle oil cooling system on certain 988G Wheel Loaders and 834G Wheel Dozers equipped with an axle cooler. The core assembly for the axle oil cooler can fail when the system is operated in severe cold temperatures (below -18 degrees C (0 degrees F)). The increased viscosity of the cold oil can create high pressures in the axle oil cooler system and rupture the rear core assembly. A check valve can be relocated to eliminate this problem.AFFECTED PRODUCT

- Remove the existing hoses, seals and fittings from connections B to C and from connections A to D. Do not discard the existing check valve.
- For 6GZ1-Up machines, remove the union assembly at connection C. Install a new 45-degree elbow (8) and seal (7) where the union was removed.
- Install the new Hose Assembly (1) from B to C, as shown in Illustration 1. Use a new seal (7) at both ends of the hose.
- Install new adapter assembly (2) and union assembly (3) at connection A. Install the existing check valve (4). The check valve should flow to connection D and away from connection A. Install new connector assembly (5). Install the new hose assembly (6) to connection D, as shown in Illustration 1. Use a new seal (7) at connection D. Illustration 1 shows the finished installation.

- Remove the existing hoses, seals and fittings from connections B to C and from connections A to D. Remove the existing tee at B. Do not discard the existing check valve.
- Install the new tee and seals (8) at connection B. Install the new hose assembly (1) from B to C, as shown in Illustration 2. Use a new seal (7) at the end of the hose near connection (C).
- Install new adapter assembly (2) and union assembly (3) at connection A. Install the existing check valve (4). The check valve should flow to connection D and away from connection A. Install new connector assembly (5). Install the new hose assembly (6) to connection D, as shown in Illustration 2. Use a new seal (7) at connection D. Illustration 2 shows the finished installation.
Illustration 3 - Left side view of cooler core
Additional contributors to core failure can include reverse installation of the core bypass check valves (1) or reverse connection of the hoses to the cooler group (3). Verify that the check valves located just outside of the core face allow flow from the front to the rear of the cores, as they are oriented in the machine. The arrow on the check valve should be checked to make sure that the direction matches Illustration 3. Verify that the hoses are connected such that flow from the pump enters the fan motor (for the rear circuit) and filters before entering the cores.
