Ensure that all of the safety messages are legible. Clean the safety messages or replace the safety messages if the words cannot be read or if the pictures are not visible. When the safety messages are cleaned, use a cloth, water, and soap. Do not use solvent, gasoline, or other harsh chemicals to clean the safety messages. Solvents, gasoline, or harsh chemicals could loosen the adhesive that secures the safety messages. The safety messages that are loosened could drop off of the package.
Replace any damaged safety messages or missing safety messages. If a safety message is attached to a part of the package that is replaced, install a new safety message on the replacement part. Any Caterpillar dealer can provide new safety messages.
Do not operate or work on this engine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility. |
The safety messages that may be attached on the package are illustrated and described below.
Illustration 1 | g01269716 |
Read the Manual Before Operating (1)
The safety message for reading the manual before operating the unit is located on the outside of the door of the control panel.
Illustration 2 | g00306265 |
Do not operate or work on this engine or generator set unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility. |
Improper Jumper Cable Connections (2)
The safety message for the connections for the jumper cables is located near the electric starting motor. This motor can be located on either side of the engine.
Illustration 3 | g00897261 |
IMPROPER JUMPER CABLE CONNECTIONS CAN CAUSE EXPLOSION RESULTING IN PERSONAL INJURY. BATTERIES MAY BE LOCATED IN SEPARATE COMPARTMENTS. WHEN USING JUMPER CABLES, ALWAYS CONNECT POSITIVE (+) CABLE TO POSITIVE (+) TERMINAL OF BATTERY CONNECTED TO STARTER SOLENOID AND NEGATIVE (-) CABLE FROM EXTERNAL SOURCE TO STARTER NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL (IF MACHINE NOT EQUIPPED WITH STARTER NEGATIVE TERMINAL, CONNECT TO ENGINE BLOCK.) FOLLOW PROCEDURE IN THE OPERATION MANUAL. |
The safety message for electrical shock is located on the valve cover bases.
Illustration 4 | g00305892 |
Ignition systems can cause electrical shocks. Avoid contacting the ignition system components and wiring. Do not attempt to remove the valve covers when the engine is operating. The transformers are grounded to the valve covers. Personal injury or death may result and the ignition system will be damaged if the valve covers are removed during engine operation. The engine will not operate without the valve covers. |
The safety message for keeping the vandal door open during operation is located on the outside of the door of the control panel.
Illustration 5 | g00305896 |
Always operate this unit with the vandal door open. Operating the unit with the vandal door closed restricts access to the emergency stop button and could result in injury or death. |
The safety message for no step is located on the crossbeams for the radiator.
Illustration 6 | g00327774 |
Do not climb on the crossbeams for the radiator. Personal injury may result. Use an adequate ladder or use an appropriate work platform for climbing.
The safety message for electrical distribution (generator) is located on the covers of the generator.
Illustration 7 | g00296980 |
Do not connect generator to a utility electrical distribution system unless it is isolated from the system. Electrical feedback into the distribution system can occur and could cause personal injury or death. Open and secure main distribution system switch, or if the connection is permanent, install a double throw transfer switch to prevent electrical feedback. Some generators are specifically approved by a utility to run in parallel with the distribution system and isolation may not be required. Always check with your utility as to the applicable circumstances. |
The safety message for high voltage is located on the following components: the terminal box, the connection box and the circuit breaker box.
Illustration 8 | g00308803 |
Personal injury or death can result from high voltage. When power generation equipment must be in operation to make tests and/or adjustments, high voltage and current are present. Improper test equipment can fail and present a high voltage shock hazard to its user. Make sure the testing equipment is designed for and correctly operated for high voltage and current tests being made. When servicing or repairing electric power generation equipment:
|
The safety message for automatic starting is located on the following components: the terminal box, the connection box and the circuit breaker box.
Illustration 9 | g00327883 |
When the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode, the engine can start at any moment. To avoid personal injury, always remain clear of the the engine when the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode. |
Read the Manual Before Operating (9)
The safety message for servicing the engine is located on the following components: the terminal box, the connection box and the circuit breaker box.
Illustration 10 | g00308764 |
Do not operate or work on this engine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility. |
Coolant Pressure and Hot Surface (10)
The safety messages for the coolant pressure and the hot surface are located near the top of the radiator on the front and on the rear.
Illustration 11 | g00107971 |
The coolant is hot and the coolant is under pressure. Do not touch the hot surfaces. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the procedure to follow when you check the radiator. |
The warning label for the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) hazardous atmosphere is located on the left side of the engine on a flat surface.
Illustration 12 | g00524055 |
Do not disconnect equipment unless power has been disconnected or the area is known to be non-hazardous |
Approval by the CSA is a requirement for engines that operate in hazardous locations. Volatile flammable gases are present in these locations. The gases are normally confined within closed systems. The gases can only escape if the system accidentally breaks down. The CSA warning is intended to prevent a hazardous atmosphere from igniting.
Volatile flammable gas that is contacted by a spark will cause an explosion. This could result in personal injury or death. Also, property could be damaged.
Do not disconnect electrical equipment unless the power has been disconnected. Otherwise, ensure that the atmosphere is not hazardous.
The safety message for lifting the generator set is located on the engine mounting rails.
Illustration 13 | g01270324 |
Improper lift rigging can allow unit to tumble causing injury and damage. |
Before lifting the generator set, read this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Generator Set Lifting" topic in the Operation Section.
If improper equipment is used to lift the generator set, injury and damage can occur. Use cables that are properly rated for the weight. Use a spreader bar and attach the cables according to the information on the safety message.
