--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------
Tubes and glands are used in the front suspension groups for all 768, 772 and 776 Tractors and 769, 773 and 777 Trucks.
When new, the tube fits loosely inside the housing assembly. But, in time, rust and corrosion can cause the tube to become stuck (not free to move).
Removal of both the tube and the gland is necessary for replacement of several seals.
The 6V3141 and 6V3142 Puller Plates are available for use with a 55-ton capacity hydraulic cylinder to remove the stuck tube and gland from the housing assembly. The 6V3141 Puller Plate is used during front suspension group repairs for 776 Tractors and 777 Trucks and 769 and 773 Trucks. The 6V3142 Puller Plate is used during front suspension group repairs for 768 and 772 Tractors and 769 and 773 Trucks.
Procedure For Removal Of Stuck Tube And Gland
1. Use the procedure in the Service Manual to remove the front suspension group from the truck or tractor.
2. Disassemble the front suspension group, according to the procedure given in the Service Manual. All internal parts must be removed, including the wiper seal and wear ring at the lower end of the suspension group.
NOTE: Diassembly and assembly of the suspension group is most easily done on a hydraulic cylinder repair stand.
3. Put the housing assembly, tube and gland in hot soap and water, or solvent and keep it there through the night.
4. Make two spacers, both approximately 101.6 mm (4") long, 50.8 mm (2") wide and 25.4 mm (1") thick, or 101.6 mm (4") long and 50.8 mm (2") in diameter, from SAE 1020 steel.
5. Assemble the parts as shown in the Illustration, and connect the 5P2998 Puller Cylinder to a hydraulic power source.
NOTICE |
---|
DO NOT use a puller cylinder that has a capacity of more than 55 tons. The use of a cylinder with a capacity of more than 55 tons can damage the 6V3141 and 6V3142 Puller Plates and/or the front suspension group.

6. Use the procedures given in the Service Manual to assemble and install the front suspension group.
