C-15, C-16, and C-18 Engines Caterpillar

Compression - Test

Usage:

C-15 6NZ
Cylinder compression may be affected by many reasons. Some of the possibilities are listed below.

  • Restriction in the inlet system or the exhaust system

  • Inlet valves and exhaust valves that are not properly adjusted

  • Leaky head gasket

  • Slow cranking speed

  • Damaged piston or rings

These Caterpillar engines use Keystone piston rings. Keystone piston rings are designed to expand during the compression stroke of the engine. At engine cranking speed, the Keystone piston rings do not fully seal. This results in unstable readings for cylinder compression. As a result Caterpillar does not recommend performing compression tests on engines that use Keystone piston rings.
