Usage:
120G, 130G, 140G, 12G, 14G And 16G Motor Graders
At times it is necessary to adjust the bevel gear and pinion backlash (tooth clearance) and carrier bearing preload on the above motor graders.
The FT1516, FT1517, FT1518 and FT1519 Differential Side Nut Adjusting Tools (see Illustration 1) can be used to adjust the preload and backlash while the differential is in-chassis.

Each of the dealer-fabricated tools is made of an SAE 1020 steel tube and two spanner nuts. The spanner nuts, which can be taken from a damaged differential, are welded on each end of the tube.
The lugs on the nuts will engage and drive the spanner nuts on the differential. Holes in the tube permit use of a bar to put more torque on the nut. See Illustration 2.

Drawings for the FT1516, FT1517, FT1518 and FT1519 Differential Side Nut Adjusting Tools are available from your Division Service Manager.
The new tools are for the machines as shown in the chart.
For specific instructions to adjust the carrier bearing preload and bevel gear and pinion backlash, see the April 14, 1980 Service Magazine article, "Procedure To Adjust Support Bearing Preload And Gear Backlash (Tooth Clearance) For Bevel Gear And Pinion" on Pages 6 and 7. The backlash specifications for each motor grader are given in the Specifications section of the Service Manual.
