Type 1
Illustration 1 | g00853657 |
Typical Example |
Note: Measure crankshaft end play and record clearance before the clutch is installed. After the clutch has been installed onto the engine, hit the output shaft sharply on the end. This is done in order to relieve any preload.
(1) Bearing adjustment
Use the following procedure for bearing adjustment:
- Tighten the bearing retainer until there is no clearance between the cup and the cone.
- Loosen the bearing retainer. Loosen approximately three notches. Tighten the bearing retainer again.
- Strike the output end of the shaft in order to seat the inner bearing cup against the bearing retainer. Check end play.
Reference: Refer to table 1 for bearing end play measurements.
(2) Clutch Engagement Check
Use the following procedure for adjustment:
- Engagement force is measured in torque on the end of the splined clutch lever shaft.
- Remove the nameplate from the clutch housing in order to access the adjustment locknut for the engagement force.
- Rotate the clutch shaft in order to access the lock pin and the adjustment locknut.
- Disengage adjusting lock pin and rotate the adjusting ring clockwise in order to increase the engagement torque.
- Rotate the adjusting ring counterclockwise in order to decrease the engagement torque.
Reference: Refer to table 1 for engagement torque on the splined clutch lever shaft.

Type 2
Illustration 2 | g00853519 |
Typical Example |
Note: Measure crankshaft end play and record clearance before the clutch is installed. After the clutch has been installed onto the engine, hit the output shaft sharply on the end. This is done in order to relieve any preload.
(1) Tighten the bolts to a torque of 240 ± 40 N·m (177 ± 30 lb ft).
(2) The hub assembly adjustment
Use the following procedure for adjusting the hub assembly.
- Assemble the retaining washer and torque the bolt to 367 N·m (271 lb ft) to 408 N·m (301 lb ft).
- Disassemble the retaining washer and the bolt. Measure the clearance gap from the hub face to the shaft end.
- Install the shim pack 0.13 mm (0.005 inch) to 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) less than the gap.
- Reassemble the retaining washer and the bolt over the shim pack. Torque the bolt to 367 N·m (271 lb ft) to 408 N·m (301 lb ft).
(3) Bearing end play adjustment
Use the following procedure for bearing adjustment:
- Rotate the shaft at least three revolutions in order to seat the rollers before measuring the rotating torque. Tighten the bearing retainer until there is a 6.8 N·m (5 lb ft) torque on the rotating shaft.
- If the rotating torque is not constant, rotate the shaft or inspect the bearing until the torque is constant. Causes of the inconsistent torque may be contamination or damaged bearings.
- Mark the seventh locking slot in the bearing retainer that is clockwise from the locking slot on the bearing retainer. Determine the seventh slot by counting from the bearing retainer notch in line with the locking slot on the bearing carrier as number one.
- Loosen the bearing retainer until the marked locking slot is in line with the locking slot.
- Lock the bearing retainer in place with the locking bolt.
- Rotate the bearing carrier and pull up on the shaft in order to seat the bearing cup against the bearing retainer.
(4) Clutch Engagement Check
A torque of 772 N·m (569 lb ft) to 1018 N·m (751 lb ft) on the splined clutch lever shaft is required to engage the clutch.
Use the following procedure for adjusting the engagement torque:
- Engagement force is measured in torque on the end of the splined clutch lever shaft.
- Remove the nameplate from the clutch housing in order to access the adjustment locknut for the engagement force.
- Rotate the clutch shaft in order to access the lock pin and the adjustment locknut.
- Disengage adjusting lock pin and rotate the adjusting ring clockwise in order to increase the engagement torque.
- Rotate the adjusting ring counterclockwise in order to decrease the engagement torque.
