3034 Marine Engine - Installation Guide Caterpillar

Battery Circuit Requirements

Usage:

3034 CPP
The battery negative should be grounded as close as possible to the battery. The battery negative must be connected to the zinc anode bonding system in the vessel. This will reduce the event of electrical interference with electronic equipment on the vessel.

A battery isolator switch should be installed in the positive battery cable as close to the battery as possible. The switch should be suitable for a momentary current of at least 1000 amp.

Refer to Table 2 for the requirements for the battery.

Table 1
Requirements for the Battery

-5 °C (23 °F) and Higher Temperatures

Engine     12 Volt
3034 Marine engine     One 800 amp battery in accordance with SAE J537
Temperatures below
-5 °C (23 °F)

3034 Marine engine     Two 535 amp 12 volt batteries in parallel in accordance with SAE J537

Refer to Table 2 for the Caterpillar batteries that are recommended for the vessel.

Engine     12 Volt
3034 Marine engine     One 8C-3627 12 Volt 800 amp Battery
Temperatures below
-5 °C (23 °F)

3034 Marine engine     Two 8C-3600 12 Volt 500 amp Battery in parallel

Refer to Table 3 for the requirements for the battery cables.

Table 3
Battery Cables for 12 Volt Systems
Gauge of the Cable     Maximum Total Length (1)     Nominal Resistance
00
5.6 m (18.37 ft)

0.000293 ohms per meter (0.0000890 ohms per ft)
000
9.0 m (29.53 ft)

0.000189 ohms per meter (0.0000600 ohms per ft)
( 1 ) The length of all of the cables in the starting motor circuit should be added together in order to give the total length. This includes positive battery cables and negative battery cables. The Maximum Total Length that is shown should not be exceeded.
