A new flash file is now available for Caterpillar Dealers and Truck Engine Parts and Service (TEPS) Dealers through SIS Web and the bulletin board. The new 188-9579 Test ECM Primer File is used to program a test ECM. This flash file must be downloaded into the test ECM prior to changing the personality module (flash file). Failure to download the 188-9579 Test ECM Primer File into the test ECM prior to changing the personality module (flash file) will make the test ECM inoperable. After downloading the 188-9579 Test ECM Primer File, the test ECM will only communicate with Winflash until a standard personality module (flash file) is installed. The test ECM requires June 1999 or newer software. Failure to adhere may cause the test ECM to be inoperable.
The test ECM should be used to confirm all suspected failures of the ECM on the listed truck engines that use the ADEM 2000 software. The original ECM is not the source of the problem if the same problem remains with the test ECM installed. The original ECM must be reinstalled if the same problem remains with the test ECM installed. The test ECM should be used for active faults as well as repeatable problems, with fault codes or without fault codes. Low power is not usually caused by failure of the ECM. Before the test ECM is used for power problems, be sure to select a rating number. Set the Full Load Setting (FLS). Set the Full Torque Setting (FTS). Program the proper injector codes. It may be necessary to program the "vehicle speed" parameters in order to duplicate a certain problem.
Note: The test ECM should not be used for problems that can not be repeated or intermittent problems. The test ECM should never be left on a customer's vehicle while the vehicle is in service.
Use the following procedure for the test ECM.
- Before the test ECM is used, the latest software should be flashed into the suspect ECM. If the latest software is already installed on the suspect ECM this step may be omitted.
- Try to duplicate the problem. It is not necessary to replace the suspect ECM if the problem is eliminated by the latest software. If the problem is not eliminated by the latest software, proceed to step 3.
- Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). Select the ECM replacement feature under the "Service /Copy Configuration" menu. Copy the "Customer Parameters" from the suspect ECM.
- Remove P1 and P2 from the suspect ECM. Leave the suspect ECM mounted on the engine.
- Connect P1 and P2 to the test ECM. Temporarily attach the test ECM to the engine.
- Flash the test ECM with the 188-9579 Test ECM Primer File.
Note: Failure to flash the test ECM with the 188-9579 Test ECM Primer File may make the test ECM inoperable. Observe the check engine lamp after the test ECM has been flashed with the 188-9579 Test ECM Primer File. The 188-9579 Test ECM Primer File was not able to configure the test ECM for a change to the software if the check engine lamp is on. Return the test ECM to Caterpillar if this condition occurs.
- Flash the test ECM with the correct engine software. The software must be June 1999 or newer software. Do not attempt to change the personality module code. The personality module code should be 65280. Check for an active 252-11 code if the engine will not start but the ECM will communicate. This code is for incorrect engine software.
- Program the "Truck Manufacturer" for a 3126B Truck Engine to "GM" or "Other", depending on the vehicle that is being serviced.
- Use the "Copy Configuration" from the Service menu of ET. Load the parameters that were copied from the suspect ECM into the test ECM.
- Try to duplicate the problem. There is not a problem with the suspect ECM when the same problem exists with the test ECM connected to the engine. Reconnect the suspect ECM. Continue to troubleshoot using the appropriate troubleshooting guide.
- When there is an active fault on the suspect ECM, verify that the fault is no longer active when the test ECM is installed. Be sure to create the exact conditions that caused the problem to occur. Problems that occur with the engine at operating temperature should be duplicated with the engine at operating temperature.
- If the problem is resolved by using the test ECM, reinstall the P1 and P2 connectors on the suspect ECM in order to verify that the problem returns. If the test ECM functions properly, but the suspect ECM does not function properly, replace the suspect ECM.
- Contact the appropriate product analyst if assistance is needed.
