曲轴齿轮通过惰轮驱动凸轮轴齿轮。 两侧的凸轮轴必须与曲轴正时对应,以使活塞和气门同步运动。

对于每个气缸,凸轮轴都采用三个凸轮加以控制。 其中两个凸轮控制气门,另外一个控制喷油器。

每一侧的凸轮轴转动时,凸轮轴上的凸轮会使挺杆 (6) 上下移动。 挺杆的移动会带动推杆 (5) 推动摇臂 (1) 。 摇臂的移动致使气门桥 (2) 向下推缸盖上的定位销。 气门桥使两个气门同时开启。 这两个气门可以是进气门,也可以是排气门。 每个气缸都有两个进气门和两个排气门。

挺杆下移时,在气门弹簧 (4) 的作用下,气门关闭。

旋转机构 (3) 使气门在发动机运转时转动。 气门转动可尽量减少气门上的积碳,从而延长气门的使用寿命。
