(1) Fabricate the plate from 6.4 mm (0.25 inch) flat stock. The outside dimensions of the plate are 32 mm (1.25 inch) by 133 mm (5.25 inch). Drill a 16.5 mm (0.65 inch) hole in the center.
(2) Fabricate the plate from 6.4 mm (0.25 inch) flat stock. The outside diameter is 203 mm (8 inch). Drill a 16.5 mm (0.65 inch) hole in the center.
(3) This tool is an alternative Valve Spring Compressor Tool.

Start By:

  1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove".

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Do not remove or install the spring locks with your fingers. If the spring should move, personal injury may result.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.

  3. Install Tooling (C) onto the cylinder head.

  4. Compress the springs with Tooling (C) and use a magnet to remove locks (2).

  5. Remove Tooling (C) from the cylinder head.

  7. Remove outer valve springs (4) and inner valve springs (5). Inspect the valve springs.

The free length of inner valve spring (5) is 107.00 mm (4.213 inch). The force that is required to compress inner valve spring (5) to a length of 79.25 mm (3.120 inch) is 325 to 397 N (73 to 89 lb).

The free length of outer valve spring (4) is 114.00 mm (4.488 inch). The force that is required to compress outer valve spring (4) to a length of 84.87 mm (3.340 inch) is 682 to 834 N (153 to 188 lb).

  8. Remove spring guides (6).

    Illustration 10g00651717

  9. Rotate the cylinder head for 180 degrees to orient the valve seats upward. Be careful not to allow the valves to fall from the cylinder head and remove Tooling (B).

  10. Remove valves (7). Mark the valves and the bores for original installation upon assembly.

  11. Inspect the valves and valve seats for wear. Reface the valves to get a new sealing surface.

    Illustration 11g00651728

  12. If valve seats (8) must be removed, use Tooling (D). Engage the seat removal plate of Tooling (D) with the lower edge of the valve seat.

  13. Use Tooling (E) to remove the retaining ring from valve guide (9).

    NOTICE

Do not strike the highly finished surface of the cylinder head with hammer at any time, or damage to this surface will occur.

  14. Use Tooling (F) to remove valve guides (9). Inspect the valve guides.

    Illustration 14g00651770

  15. Remove O-ring seals (10) from valve guide (9).

  16. Use Tooling (H) to measure the inside diameter of valve guide (9). The correct inside diameter is 16.031 ± 0.028 mm (0.6311 ± 0.0011 inch).

    Illustration 15g00651774

  17. Inspect bridge dowels (11). If the bridge dowels must be replaced, use Tooling (G) to remove the bridge dowels. Do not allow Tooling (G) to fall as the bridge dowels are removed from the cylinder head.

  18. Thoroughly clean the cylinder head and inspect the cylinder head.

  19. Inspect the water jacket of the cylinder head. If cleaning is necessary, remove all the plugs from the cylinder head. Use the hot tank process for cleaning.
