Start By:
- Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove".
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Install cylinder head (1) on Tooling (A). The weight of cylinder head (1) is approximately
205 kg (450 lb) . Position cylinder head (1) with the springs upward.Show/hide tableIllustration 2 g00651685 Show/hide tableIllustration 3 g00651686 - Install Tooling (B) onto the cylinder head. The threaded end of the rod protrudes from the bottom of the cylinder head.

Illustration 4 g00651692 Show/hide tableDo not remove or install the spring locks with your fingers. If the spring should move, personal injury may result.
Show/hide tablePersonal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.
Spring force will be released when covers are removed.
Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
- Install Tooling (C) onto the cylinder head.

The free length of inner valve spring (5) is
107.00 mm (4.213 inch) . The force that is required to compress inner valve spring (5) to a length of79.25 mm (3.120 inch) is325 to 397 N (73 to 89 lb) .The free length of outer valve spring (4) is
114.00 mm (4.488 inch) . The force that is required to compress outer valve spring (4) to a length of84.87 mm (3.340 inch) is682 to 834 N (153 to 188 lb) .Show/hide tableIllustration 9 g00651713 - Remove spring guides (6).

Illustration 10 g00651717 - Rotate the cylinder head for 180 degrees to orient the valve seats upward. Be careful not to allow the valves to fall from the cylinder head and remove Tooling (B).
- Remove valves (7). Mark the valves and the bores for original installation upon assembly.
- Inspect the valves and valve seats for wear. Reface the valves to get a new sealing surface.

Illustration 14 g00651770 - Remove O-ring seals (10) from valve guide (9).
- Use Tooling (H) to measure the inside diameter of valve guide (9). The correct inside diameter is
16.031 ± 0.028 mm (0.6311 ± 0.0011 inch) .Show/hide tableIllustration 15 g00651774 - Inspect bridge dowels (11). If the bridge dowels must be replaced, use Tooling (G) to remove the bridge dowels. Do not allow Tooling (G) to fall as the bridge dowels are removed from the cylinder head.
- Thoroughly clean the cylinder head and inspect the cylinder head.
- Inspect the water jacket of the cylinder head. If cleaning is necessary, remove all the plugs from the cylinder head. Use the hot tank process for cleaning.
