Start By:

  1. Remove the bucket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bucket - Remove".

Note: SERVICE DATA: TOOLING (ZZ) WILL NOT BE IDENTIFIED IN PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE REMOVAL OR IN THE INSTALLATION. THIS TOOLING IS SHOWN IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE EXPERIENCED SERVICEMAN.

Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

----------------------

  1. Start the engine. Extend the stick. Lower the stick to the ground.

    ------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns.

To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.

    ----------------------

  1. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".

  1. Install Tooling (A) under the front of the boom for support.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device and a hoist to the rod end of the stick cylinder, as shown.

  1. Remove retaining bolt (1) and the washer.

  1. Remove pin assembly (2) and spacer (3). Put a small wood block under the rod end of the stick cylinder. Lower the stick cylinder onto the wood block. Secure the rod of the stick cylinder so that the rod will not extend.

Note: Shims may be used between the stick and the stick cylinder at the pin joint. These shims are used to adjust the lateral clearance between the components at the pin joint. Put identification marks on all shims for assembly purposes.

  1. Remove the shims at the pin joint for the stick cylinder.

  1. Reinstall pin assembly (2), retaining bolt (1) and the washer.

  1. Attach a suitable lifting device and a hoist to the stick. Attach the lifting device to pin assembly (2) and the bucket control linkage, as shown.

  1. Disconnect hose assemblies (4) from the bucket cylinder. Put plugs in the ends of the hose assemblies. Plugs prevent oil loss. Plugs prevent contaminating the hydraulic system.

  1. Remove retaining bolt (5) and the washer from pin assembly (6) .

  1. Use two persons to remove pin assembly (6). The weight of pin assembly (6) is approximately 23 kg (50 lb).

  1. Carefully separate the stick from the boom. The combined weight of the stick, bucket cylinder and bucket control linkage is approximately 873 kg (1925 lb).

Note: Shims may be used between the stick and the boom at the pin joint. These shims are used to adjust the lateral clearance between the components at the pin joint. Put identification marks on all shims for assembly purposes.

  1. Remove the shims at the pin joint for the stick and the boom.
