Removal Procedure

( 1 ) | The timing pin is required to install Bosch fuel injection pumps. |
( 2 ) | The timing pin is required to install Lucas and Stanadyne fuel injection pumps. |
Start By:
- Remove the front cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover - Remove".

Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Align the timing marks on idler gear (3) with the timing marks on crankshaft gear (5), camshaft gear (1), and fuel injection pump gear (2) .

- Remove three bolts (6) from idler gear retainer plate (4) .
- Remove idler gear retainer plate (4) and idler gear (3) from the engine.
- Remove idler gear hub (7) from the cylinder block.

- Remove bushing (8) from idler gear (3) with a suitable puller. If the bushing cannot be removed with a puller, grind the face off of one side of the bushing and remove the bushing with a press.

- Insert Tool (A) through fuel injection pump gear (2) into hole (X). Push Tool (A) into hole (X) as far as possible.

Note: Do not loosen two torx screws (10). If torx screws (10) are loosened and the timing plate is moved, the timing position that is set at the factory will be lost. If the two torx screws are loosened, the engine must be set to top center of the No. 1 cylinder on the compression stroke before the two torx screws are tightened. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting Module, "Fuel System" topic for information on setting the top center compression position for the No. 1 cylinder.
- Remove four bolts (9) from fuel injection pump gear (2) .
- Use Tool (B) to remove fuel injection pump gear (2) .
