Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Thoroughly clean the outside of the travel motor and the final drive prior to disassembly.

Personal injury or death can result from not following the proper procedures.
To avoid the possibility of injury or death, follow the established procedure.
Note: Piston (34) must be removed from the spindle by using shop air. The piston can come out of the spindle with force during the removal procedure. To prevent possible personal injury, install Tooling (C), as shown. Tooling (C) will retain the piston in the spindle, when shop air pressure is applied to port (X).
Show/hide tableIllustration 14 g00610500 - Install Tooling (C) on the spindle, as shown. Use suitable sized bolts and large, flat washers in order to hold Tooling (C) in place. Apply shop air at a pressure of
525 kPa (75 psi) to port (X). The piston will move out of the bore in the spindle. Remove Tooling (C) and piston (34) from the spindle.Show/hide tableIllustration 15 g00610519 - Remove two backup rings (35) and (37) from piston (34). Remove two O-ring seals (36) and (38) from piston (34).

NOTICE In order to ensure that each piston assembly is installed into its original bore, identify and mark each piston assembly, retaining plate and the barrel before removing the piston assembly.
To avoid damage to the barrel assembly parts, do not allow the parts to separate from the assembly during removal or installation.
Show/hide tableIllustration 17 g00610539 - Use Tooling (A) to rotate the final drive and the spindle. Carefully remove barrel assembly (40) from the shaft.
- Use the following procedure to disassemble barrel assembly (40).
- Put identification marks on nine piston assemblies (41) in order to indicate the locations of the pistons in the retainer plate (42) and the barrel (40). Remove nine piston assemblies (41) and retainer plate (42) from barrel (40) as a unit. Separate the piston assemblies from the retainer plate.

To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the spring pressure.
Note: There is spring force against washer (46). When retaining ring (45) is removed, the spring force will release. To prevent possible personal injury, removal of the internal components in barrel (40) must be performed in a press. The press will retain spring (47) and washer (48).
- Put barrel (40) in a press. Install a plate on washer (46). Use a plate that will provide clearance for the removal of retaining ring (45). Put slight compression on washer (46) with the press. Remove retaining ring (45). Slowly release the spring compression.
Note: Washer (46) and washer (48) are identical and the washers are interchangeable.
- Remove washer (46), spring (47) and washer (48) from barrel (40).

NOTICE The thread lock compound that is used on the reamer bolts may cause the reamer bolts to seize during removal.
The reamer bolts should be slowly removed by hand. Do not use an impact wrench in order to remove the reamer bolts. If the reamer bolts will no longer turn during removal, do not force or complete the removal. Instead, tighten the bolts, then try to loosen them again.
