CID 2249 - Steering Accumulator Purge Solenoid

FMI 05 - Current Below Normal

Illustration 1g06351804
Steering accumulator purge solenoid circuit

This diagnostic code indicates the Chassis ECM detects steering accumulator purge solenoid current is below normal.

The following can cause this code:

  • Open solenoid energizer circuit

  • Open solenoid return circuit

  • Failed solenoid

  • Failed ECM

The resistance of the solenoid coil should be 27 ± 1.4 ohms at 20 °C (68.0 °F).

System Response:

  • A Level 1 Warning occurs

Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created codes and clear these created codes after the original diagnostic code has been corrected.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

  1. Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.

  2. Inspect the harness.

    Clean the harness connector contacts.

Inspect the harness connector contacts for corrosion or damage.

Inspect the wire insulation for damage caused by heat, corrosion, or chafing.

  3. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each circuit wire.

  4. Reconnect all harness connectors.

Verify that the connectors are fully seated and the clips are fastened.

  5. Check for intermittent problems. Using Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET), perform a wiggle test on the harness.

  6. Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.

  7. Operate the machine.

  8. Check CID 2249 FMI 05 status.

Expected Result:

CID 2249 FMI 05 is not active.

Results:

  • OK - CID 2249 FMI 05 is not active.

Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection at one of the connectors that was checked.

    Resume normal operation.

    STOP

  • NOT OK - CID 2249 FMI 05 is active. Proceed to Test Step 2.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE SOLENOID

  1. Disconnect the harness from the solenoid.

  2. At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper wire from contact 1 (wire U772-YL(Yellow)) to contact 2 (wire H868-WH(White)).

  3. Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.

  4. Observe the diagnostic code CID 2249 FMI 05 status.

Expected Result:

CID 2249 FMI 05 is no longer active. CID 2249 FMI 06 is active.

Results:

  • OK - CID 2249 FMI 05 is no longer active. CID 2249 FMI 06 is active. The solenoid has failed.

    Repair: Replace the solenoid.

Verify that the new solenoid corrects the problem.

    STOP

  • NOT OK - CID 2249 FMI 05 is active. The jumper wire does not affect the diagnostic code status. Proceed to Test Step 3.

Test Step 3. CHECK FOR AN OPEN

The jumper wire that was installed in the previous test step remains in place.

  1. Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.

  2. Disconnect the harness connectors from the Chassis ECM.

  3. At the harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper wire from contact 2 (wire H868-WH(White)) to contact 1 (wire U772-YL(Yellow)).

  4. At the machine harness connectors for the ECM, measure the resistance from contact J2-6 (wire U772-YL(Yellow)) to contact J2-8 (wire H868-WH(White)).

  5. Check the resistance.

Expected Result:

The resistance is less than 5.0 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - The resistance is less than 5.0 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5.0 ohms. The harness is open.

Repair: Repair or replace the harness.

The open connection or the possible bad connection is in one of the following wires: U772-YL(Yellow)and H868-WH(White).

    • A resistance greater than 5000 ohms indicates that a wire is not connected or a wire is open.

    • A resistance greater than 5.0 ohms but less than 5000 ohms indicates one of the connections is not open completely, but the connection is poor.

    STOP

Test Step 4. CHECK THE ECM OPERATION

The disconnect switch and the keyswitch remain off.

The harness connector for the solenoid and the ECM J1 connector remains disconnected.

  1. Remove the jumper wire that was installed in the last test step.

  2. Disconnect the solenoid energizer circuit . At the harness connector J1 for the ECM, use a 151-6320 Removal Tool to remove the solenoid wire U772-YL(Yellow)and the socket at contact J2-6.

  3. Reconnect the harness J1 and J2 connectors to the ECM.

  4. Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.

  5. Use a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe not connected to a multimeter. Contact the ECM pin at J2-6 through the empty space in the J2 connector.

  6. While the status of CID 2249 FMI 05 is observed, contact the other end of the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe to frame ground.

Expected Result:

CID 2249 FMI 05 changes to CID 2249 FMI 06.

Results:

  • OK - CID 2249 FMI 05 changes to CID 2249 FMI 06.

Repair: Reconnect the disconnected solenoid wire back into the correct space in the ECM connector.

The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection at one of the connectors that was checked.

    Resume normal operation.

    STOP

  • NOT OK - CID 2249 FMI 05 does not change to CID 2249 FMI 06. The ECM may have failed.

Repair: Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Contact your technical communicator. If the ECM requires replacement, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP
