Note: Check the O-ring seals for wear or for damage. Replace the seals, if necessary.
Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily injury. To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure and wear protective equipment. |
- Install nine springs (34) in piston (33). Position thrust plate (35) on the piston. Tighten 11 M5 X 0.8 X 20 mm socket head screws (37) evenly.
- Position the large opening of spindle (22) on top. Install end plate (38), six plates (39), and seven disks (40) inside spindle (22). Ensure that the disks and plates are alternated in the correct sequence.
- Install backup ring (41) in the lower groove in the inside wall of spindle (22). Install O-ring seal (42) above backup ring (41).
- Install O-ring seal (31) in the upper groove in the inside wall of spindle (22). Install backup ring (32) above O-ring seal (31).
- Apply a light coating of clean grease on the O-ring seals and on the backup rings.
- Install piston (33) in spindle (22) and install retaining ring (36). Do not remove socket head screws (37) now.
- Flip the spindle.

Illustration 2 g01033021 - Install bearing nut (28) on spindle (22). Use Tooling (A) to tighten the bearing nut to a torque of
200 N·m (150 lb ft) . Mark both the bearing nut and the spindle with a reference line to indicate the minimum final position of the bearing nut. Remove bearing nut (28). - Use Tooling (B) to install Duo-Cone Conventional Seal (23) on spindle (22). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Install".
- Install bearing cup (16) and bearing cup (30) in housing (8).
- Install bearing cone (17) into bearing cup (16).
- Use Tooling (B) to install Duo-Cone Conventional Seal (18) on spindle (22). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Install".
Note: Ensure that the Duo-Cone seal components are not pinched or displaced when the housing is installed.
- Install housing (8) over spindle (22) with the largest inside diameter facing downward.
- Install bearing cone (29) on spindle (22).
- Install bearing nut (28) on spindle (22). Use Tooling (A) to tighten the bearing nut to a minimum torque of
825 N·m (600 lb ft) . The minimum final position of the bearing nut is at the reference line which was marked in Step 8. - Stake bearing nut (28) in one place with a hammer and a punch.
- Install external retaining ring (27) in the groove on the outside of coupling (26). Install internal retaining ring (24) in the groove on the inside of the coupling.
- Apply a light coating of clean grease on thrust spacer (25). Install thrust spacer (25) on spindle (22).
Note: Gears (20) are a matched set. If one of the gears needs replacing, all three gears must be replaced. If the gear or the roller bearing needs to be replaced, both components must be replaced, as the assembly of the components is permanent. Each new roller bearing has a retainer for easier installation into the gear.
- Apply a light coating of clean oil on three gears (20) and on roller bearings (21).
- Center roller bearing (21) and the retainer on the end of gear (20) with the large chamfer on the inside diameter of the gear. Push the bearing through the retainer into the gear until the retainer snaps into the groove of the gear.
- Install each of the three roller bearings and gears (20) on spindle (22).
- Install three retaining rings (19) on spindle (22) to secure the roller bearings and the gears.

Illustration 3 g01033015 - Perform the following steps to assemble carrier assembly (5).
- Apply a light coating of clean grease on planet gear (12). Align the inside of the planet gear with needle bearings (11).
Note: Insert the end of bearing shaft (14) without a pin hole into the side of the carrier with a pin hole. The chamfered pin hole in bearing shaft (14) should face upward.
- Position carrier (15) on the side of the carrier. Insert bearing shaft (14) approximately
12.700 mm (0.5000 inch) into the carrier. - Apply a light coating of clean grease on two thrust washers (10). Position the thrust washers on the end of bearing shaft (14) which has been inserted into the carrier.
- Position planet gear (12) with needle bearings (11) on bearing shaft (14).
- Apply a light coating of clean grease on the two remaining thrust washers (10). Position the thrust washers between the planet gear and the carrier. Slide bearing shaft (14) through the thrust washers and the carrier.
- Align the pin holes in the carrier and bearing shaft (14). Install the smaller end of pin (13) into the aligned holes until the top of the pin is approximately
2.5 mm (0.10 inch) below the surface of the carrier. - Repeat Steps 23.a through 23.f for each of the two remaining planet gears (12).

- Apply a light coating of clean oil on sun gear (6). Install the sun gear in carrier assembly (5).
- Position carrier assembly (5) on housing (8).
- Apply a light coating of clean oil on sun gear (3). Position sun gear (3) in carrier assembly (5).
- Apply a light coating of clean grease on thrust washer (2) and on thrust washer (4). Position the thrust washers on the inside of the cover (1).
- Apply a light coating of clean grease on O-ring seal (7). Position the O-ring seal around the underside of cover (1).
- Position cover (1) on housing (8) and install bolts (9). Tighten the bolts to a torque of
48 to 60 N·m (35 to 45 lb ft) . - Remove 11 M5 X 0.8 X 20 mm socket head screws (37) that were installed during Step 1.
