Torque Converter Stall - Test

Usage:

24M B93

  • Ensure that the transmission oil level is correct.

  • Complete the procedure for machine preparation for troubleshooting. For the proper procedure, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".

  • Disconnect the fan solenoid control harness from the fan pump. This will cause the fan to go to max speed during the test.

  • Start the engine.

  • Ensure that the engine and transmission are operating temperature 80° C (176° F) between 90° C (194° F).

  • Fully depress service brakes for the entire test.

  • Disengage the parking brake.

Note: Do not keep the torque converter in a stall condition for long periods of time. Damage could occur in the torque converter, the engine, and the brakes.

  • With the "FNR" switch in the neutral position, shift the transmission to the Fourth SPEED FORWARD position using the Upshift gear button. Once Fourth SPEED FORWARD is displayed as the selected gear, use the "FNR" switch to put the machine in the Forward position. Wait 5 seconds and fully apply the throttle. Engine speed will increase for approximately 5 seconds and then stabilize. Wait 5 seconds after the engine speed stabilizes. Use messenger or Cat ET to read the engine speed. The displayed speed will be the stall speed.

  • Immediately shift the transmission to the NEUTRAL position. Run the engine at 1500 RPM for at least 2 minutes to cool the transmission oil. Do not repeat the test until the oil is cooled properly. Do not shutdown the engine until the oil is cooled properly.

  • Compare the stall speed reached during testing with the values in Table 1.

    Table 1
    Target Stall Speed
    Diesel API
    38 Or Less  1690
    40  1675
    42  1660
    44  1635

Note: All stall speed targets are +/- 30 RPM.

Note: Fuel API can significantly impact stall speed.

Note: Target speeds are valid from sea level to 2286 m (7500 ft).

Note: If the diesel fuel API is unknown, contact the local materials laboratory MET LAB to test a diesel sample.

  • Shut down the engine after the transmission oil is cooled properly.

  • Connect the fan solenoid control harness to the fan pump.
