Brake Disc Wear - Check

Usage:

14M-3 E9S

Specification

Introduction

This check determines the amount of wear to the brake discs, which determines if the brake pack needs to be replaced. The check may also indicate brake plate warpage, which indicates overheating of the system.

This procedure also provides information regarding the proper setting of the compensator. The compensator setting limits the amount of piston travel.

Reference: Refer to the Systems Operation, "Service Brakes" for additional information concerning the Compensator.

Required Tooling

Tooling is not required for this procedure.

Preparation for Check

  1. Move the machine to a smooth, horizontal location. Move the machine away from other operating machines and away from personnel.

  2. Place the transmission direction control switch in the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Lower all implements to the ground and set the parking brake.

  4. Shut off the engine and chock the rear wheels.

Perform the Check Procedure

This check is only valid when piston (2) is fully compressed against brake pack (1). Two people will be required to perform this check. Refer to Illustration 1 shown below.

(4) Cap
(5) Machined surface of housing.

  1. Remove cap (4) to allow visual access to indicator (3).

  2. Place the brakes in the FULLY APPLIED position.

  3. Compare indicator (3) to machined surface (5).

  • (AA) Brakes have sufficient pad remaining. Machined surface (5) is between the end of the pin and the shoulder.

  • (BB) Brakes require replacement. The end of the pin of the indicator is flush or below machined surface (5).

  • (CC) Brakes are possibly warped. The shoulder of the pin protrudes beyond machined surface (5).

Perform the Compensator Adjustment Procedure

Compensator (4) is preset at the factory. The factory setting will allow piston (2) to travel a predetermined amount of distance prior to hitting compensator (4). Refer to Illustration 1 shown below.

Table 1

Number of turns out  Tolerance(1)
2.5 Turns  ± 60 °
(1) Tolerance is measured in degrees of rotation of the adjustment knob

(3) Locknut
(4) Compensator

  1. Place the brakes in the FULLY APPLIED position to compress piston (2) fully against brake pack (1).

  2. Loosen locknut (3) completely, until the nut contacts the head of compensator (4).

  3. Back off compensator (4) several turns. Then turn compensator (4) back in until the compensator (4) contacts piston (2). Refer to Table 1 for the correct distance to back compensator (4) out from piston (2).

  4. Hold compensator (4) in position from Step 3. Then tighten locknut (3) to 65 ± 10 N·m (48 ± 7 lb ft).
