An Improved Transmission Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) is Now Used on Certain 424B Backhoe Loaders {3005, 3081}

Usage:

424B JRN
Backhoe Loader
424B (S/N: JRN1-UP)

Reference: Operation and Maintenance Manual , SEBU9920 , Transmission Oil - Change

Description Of Change: The newly designed, transmission oil dipstick is now being used on 424B Backhoe Loaders. The improved dipstick has clearer markings to prevent confusion when checking the oil level.

Adaptable To: The improved 372-3396 Oil Level Gauge As (Dipstick) is the same part number as the former design. Refer to Table 1 for the effectivity and adaptability of the improved dipstick. Refer to "Checking the Oil Level" for proper guidelines when checking the transmission oil level.

Checking the Oil Level

The proper quantity of oil for this transmission is 13.9 L (3.67 US gal).

"Safe to Start" Oil Level Check

Note: This check is a cold oil check to be performed when the engine has been off for at least 8 hours. When the engine is at operating temperature, the oil level can rise by 25 ± 5 mm (1 ± 0.2 inch).

Note: While checking the transmission oil level, the front bucket, rear bucket, and stabilizers must not be touching the ground. The machine must be positioned on level ground with only the tires touching the ground.

  1. Remove the dipstick/fill plug from the transmission.

  2. Ensure that the oil level is above the minimum oil level line on the "SAFE TO START" side of the line.

  3. Add or drain transmission oil as necessary. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for instructions on draining oil.

  4. Recheck the oil level if adjustments were made to the level. Once at the proper level, clean the dipstick and install.

"Check with Warm Oil" Oil Level Check

Note: When checking the oil during machine operation, turn off the engine for 15 minutes before using this method.

Note: While checking the transmission oil level, the front bucket, rear bucket, and stabilizers must not be touching the ground. The machine must be positioned on level ground with only the tires touching the ground.

  1. After allowing the engine to cool for 15 minutes, ensure that the gear shift is in the NEUTRAL position, start the engine, and run at low idle. Run the engine for 2 to 3 minutes to ensure that the oil is warm before checking the oil level. Keep the engine running while performing the check.

Note: Operating the engine allows the oil to circulate around the transmission oil cooler and torque converter and settle at the correct operating level.

  2. Remove the dipstick/fill plug from the transmission. Wipe the dipstick clean and then reinstall in the transmission.

  3. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. Ensure that the oil level is within the crosshatched region on the dipstick.

  4. Add or drain transmission oil as necessary. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for instructions on draining oil.

  5. Recheck the oil level if adjustments were made to the level. Once at the proper level, clean the dipstick and install.
