New VIMS software is now available for certain machines that are listed above. The new VIMS software has improvements that are listed below:
Reference: Special Instruction, REHS7428, "VIMS 3G Software Installation Guide For Certain Cat ® Product Using VIMSpc 2011A"
New Product Link and VIMS 3G Software for 523 and A4:N4 Platform is now available for the machines that are listed above.
Refer to Table 1 for the correct ECM that is installed on the machine to gather the correct software files.
VIMS ECM Identification Chart
ECM Name | Part Number | Description |
A4:N4 S/N Ending in HD | Electronic Control Module
523 S/N Ending in RM | Electronic Control Module |
Note: (A) Enter the part number of the files, when searching for the software and configuration files in SIS web. Entering the machines Serial Number will not always give the compatible configuration file for the flash file used on the VIMS platform.
(B) When searching for the Latest Production software in SIS web, in the Flash Software Download page, click the "VIMS Software & Current Releases" Link. This will bring up the "DEALER.CAT.COM" web page. Under Related Links, click "VIMS 3G Production Software Compatibility Matrix". The VIMS3G Production Flash File and Production Configuration Compatibility Matrix will pop up. Search for the correct software files for a specific machine type.
(C) Before using Communications Adapter 3 (CA3), make sure that the PC drivers and CA3 firmware have been updated.
(D) Use the latest version of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) for the optimal machine software support and use "WinFlash" to flash the new software onto the Module.
(E) The Configuration files are flashed onto the VIMS Module using the latest version of VIMSpc (2013A or later). Get the latest version of VIMSpc at: https://dealer.cat.com/cda/layout?m=398435&x=7&f=882808
(F) Prior to flashing new software, Download VIMS settings/information to help you reconfigure VIMS. Connect to VIMS Main when prompted.
(G) If the configuration settings, prior to flash change with the new software installation, re-enter the ET settings using the information of the PSR obtained prior to flash.

Note: Update the radio & gateway software in Table2 for the 523 ECM to see Payload and Cycle Count in VisionLink.
Improvements of Product Link (523)
- Improved J1939 ECM information message by populating Name field.
- Introduces support for displaying non-CAT ECM information in VisionLink.
- Improvements for displaying Tire Pressure Monitoring in VisionLink.
- Introduces support for the Cat ® Fuel Consumption Monitoring retrofit kit
- Introduces Support for Product Link PL641 integration
Improvements of Product Link (PLVIMS)
- Improved J1939 ECM information message by populating Name field
- Introduces support for the Cat Fuel Consumption Monitoring retrofit kit
- Improved Battery Back-up fault (817-12) that could be potentially be triggered on a blank ECM, during the flash process
Improvements of VIMS (523 and PLVIMS)
- Improved Telemetry reports to start outgoing message sequence at number "1" , instead of "0", as defined in the Telemetry protocol.
- Improved VIMS webpage error message reported, when viewing through Google Chrome.
- Improved Data Logger channels to report fault status (appropriate DSIs), instead of displaying "0" or some constant value.
- Improved error message description, when config file is either missing or is incompatible with the flash file.
- Improved VIMS config upload process by supporting header information, indicating whether the config is meant for either the Main or Application module.
- Improved Ethernet connectivity for VIMS automatic file push through Communicator.
- Improved CANip communications between Main and App modules. This should reduce or eliminate:
- Logging of 246-9 codes
- Loss of payload report file processing through Communicator and or loss of payload messages
- Improved Telemetry message to reports SMH in the correct format
Improvements of VIMS (Standalone Main Module A4N4)
- Improved Telemetry reports to start outgoing message sequence at number "0" , instead of "1" , as defined in the Telemetry protocol.
- Corrected VIMS webpage error message reported, when viewing through Google Chrome.
- Improved Data Logger channels to report fault status (appropriate DSIs), instead of displaying "0" or some constant value. The fault status could indicate that either the requested parameters are not supported or there is no response for a requested parameter over the datalink, for a given machine.
- Improved error message description, when configuration file is either missing or is incompatible with the flash file on the ECM.
- Improved VIMS configuration file upload process by supporting header information, indicating whether the configuration is meant for either the Main or Application module.
- Improved Telemetry message to reports Service Meter Hour (SMH) in the correct format.
- Improved Error Message with appropriate text, if user tries to upload a wrong Geo transform file (for HPGPS receiver), through the XIM tab hosted in the VIMS web pages.
- Improved GPS functionality to automatically option and sync leap seconds updates from GPS receiver
- Improved GPS date and time processing by discarding invalid data as reported by the HPGPS receiver. This should resolve the random incorrect time reporting of UTC date and time origin (1980), typically reported for a few seconds at key ON.
- Corrected the continuous file push issue that was associated with processing invalid GPS time from the HPGPS receiver.
- Corrected invalid character being inserted in the report files, associated with processing of invalid GPS time from the HPGPS receiver
Improvements of VIMS Application Module
- Improved J1939 support for reporting ECM Info, diagnostics, and events over EDDT and lifetime payload totals (weight and cycle count)
- Improved VIMS config upload process by supporting header information, indicating whether the config is meant for either the Main or Application module
- Improved Telemetry TPMS cycle message to report correct fuel information
- Improved ECM replacement support to include certain payload totals
- Enabled Front Axle Pressure to Weight ratio value written from ET, to be used for Payload Calculations
