Problem:
The 6V-5504 O-Ring Seal may be missing from the 141-4873 Seawater Heat Exchanger Group on the above engines. This O-ring seal is supposed to be located in a groove in the 103-5820 Bonnet on the right side end of the heat exchanger. The included illustration shows the location of the components.
Solution:
Those engines that are still at the factory are being reworked. The reworked engines can be identified by a "VI" that is stamped on the left side of the cylinder block next to the last side cover.
Caterpillar Dealers should check their stock for any 3126 (1ZJ1726 - 1ZJ1833) Marine Engines. If any of these engines are found that does not have the "VI" mark, check seawater heat exchanger. Make sure all of the O-ring seals are installed. After the seawater heat exchanger is checked, stamp the "VI" mark on the left side of the cylinder block next to the last side cover. The "VI" mark should be 5/8of an inch tall.
