Machine Only Operates in Travel Mode

Usage:

M320F F2W
This procedure should be performed when the machine is in the Travel Mode and the Machine ECM will not activate Economy or Power Mode.

Table 1
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Expected Result  Results
1. Check For Installation Of A Generator

A. Check to verify whether the machine has a Generator installed. When an attachment Generator is installed, enabled and selected as the active tool, the Machine ECM will automatically activate the Travel Mode to provide more engine output for the Generator.

A Generator is installed, enabled, and selected as the active tool.
OK - A Generator is installed, enabled, and selected as the active tool. When another tool is selected as the active tool and the Generator is disabled, the ECM will activate the selected mode of operation

STOP

NOT OK -A Generator is not installed or is not enabled and selected as the active tool.

Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check For Communications Errors

A. Check the Monitor for an active communication error Event. The communication error events do not have EID number assigned. The Monitor will display a communication error message on the display when one of the following errors occurs.

1. Machine Controller Communication
2. Engine Controller Communication
3. Soft Switch Panel Communication
4. CAN Data Link Error

There are no active communications errors present.
OK - There are no active communications errors present.

Proceed to Test Step 3

NOT OK -An active communication error is displayed on the Monitor.re

Repair:All communications errors require inspection of the circuits of the CAN Data Link. Refer to Systems Operation, "Warning Operation". Troubleshooting for communication errors is discussed under the title "Monitor Communication Errors".

3. Attempt To Activate The Economy Mode

A. Press the Power Mode Button on the SSP in order to attempt to activate the Economy Mode and illuminate the corresponding LED indicator.

The LED for the Economy Mode turns ON steady and does not flash.
OK - The LED for the Economy Mode turns ON steady and does not flash. The ECM has activated the Economy Mode. If the operator still perceives that the hydraulic response for the Travel Mode is active.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

NOT OK -The LED for the Economy Mode will not turn ON or the LED for the Economy Mode turns ON and flashes. The ECM will not activate the Economy Mode.

Proceed to Test Step 5.
4. Check The Position Sensor Signal For The Travel Pedal

A. Connect a computer that has the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) software installed to the service connector of the machine. Establish communication with the Machine ECM and Cat® ET . This process can be performed using the Operator Monitor if desired.
B. Do NOT press the Travel Pedal. In the "Status " menu, select "Status Group #6". Check the status of the "Straight Travel Pedal Position".

When the Travel Pedal is not pressed, the pedal position status is 0.00 (Not Depressed or 50 percent duty cycle).
OK - When the Travel Pedal is not pressed, the pedal position status is 0.00 (Not Depressed or 50 percent duty cycle). The ECM is not indicating that the Travel Pedal is depressed.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

NOT OK -The ECM is indicating that the Travel Pedal is depressed.

Repair:The signal from the Travel Pedal Position Sensor is not correct. If the position sensor signal is out of range, the ECM will activate a CID 2142 (Travel Pedal Position Sensor) diagnostic code. This situation would not result in the ECM activating the Travel Mode, however, verify that there is no active CID 2142 diagnostic code. Check the mount of the position sensor. Ensure that the position sensor is mounted correctly and is secure. Check the mechanical components for the Travel Pedal. Check the axis pin on the travel pedal. The retaining clip and the axis pin must be installed properly. Verify that the Travel Pedal sensitivity adjustment is correct. The procedure for adjusting the Travel Pedal sensitivity can be found in the hydraulic Testing and Adjusting manual for your machine. Refer to the diagnostic code troubleshooting procedures for the Travel Pedal Position Sensor (CID 2142) in order to check the sensor operation. Determine what the problem is with the Travel Pedal Position Sensor and repair the problem.

STOP
5. Perform Main Pump Testing

A. Test that the maximum engine and maximum main pump power are correct. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, UENR5282, "Main Pump - Test".
If the test values do not meet proper specifications, further testing will be needed. Follow all recommendations to help determine the root cause of the poor hydraulic response symptom.

Hydraulic testing and adjustments have been performed and have improved the hydraulic operation of the machine.
OK - Hydraulic testing has been performed and has resulted in improved response of the hydraulic operation of the machine

STOP

NOT OK -Hydraulic testing has been performed. The hydraulic operation of the machine is still not correct.

Repair: The ECM and the electrical components appear to be operating correctly. The problem may be caused by the hydraulic components on the machine.
Refer to the Service Manual for your machine and check the documentation for the hydraulic operation of the machine.
After hydraulic system repairs or adjustments are performed, the Main Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid Calibration must be performed in order to enable superior performance.
Checking the operation of the hydraulic components on the machine. If the problem is still present, flash the ECM with the latest version of software. Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program" section of this manual for the correct procedure.
If the problem is still present after flashing the latest software to your ECM, contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for consultation with Caterpillar.
