Machine Only Operates in Economy Mode

Usage:

M320F F2W
This procedure should be performed when the machine is in the Economy Mode and the ECM will not activate the Power Mode

Table 1
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Expected Result  Results
1. Attempt To Activate The Power Mode

A. Press the Power Mode Button on the SSP until the corresponding LED indicator light turns ON steady.

The LED for the power mode turns ON and does not flash.
OK - The LED for the power mode turns ON and does not flash.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

NOT OK -The LED for the Power Mode flashes and the LED for the Economy Mode is ON steady.

Proceed to Test Step 3.
2. Check That The Power Mode Is Active

A. Check if the machine has full power.
OK - The machine has full power. The problem is not present. Resume normal operation.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

NOT OK -The machine does not have full power.

Proceed to Test Step 5.
3. Check The Machine Conditions

The following machine conditions will cause the ECM to activate Economy Power Mode regardless of the operator mode selection.

1. When the ECM has activated a diagnostic code for one of the power shift solenoids, the ECM will activate the Economy Mode.
2. When the Backup Function is active, the ECM will activate the Economy Mode and implement hydraulic will be disabled.
3. When event EID E561 (Low Hydraulic Oil Temperature) is activated or if the Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor is active, the ECM will activate Economy Mode.
4. When event EID E878 (High Hydraulic Oil Temperature) is activated, the ECM will activate Economy Mode.
5. When event EID E236 (Hydraulic Oil Filter Plugged) is activated or event EID E391 (Air Filter Plugged) is activated, the ECM will activate Economy Mode.
6. When the Hydraulic Modulation Function is enabled, the ECM will activate the Economy Mode for the swing pump.

One or more of the listed machine conditions is present.
OK - One or more of the listed machine conditions is present.

Repair:The ECM will not activate the Power Mode until the active machine condition that is causing the problem is cleared.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

NOT OK -None of the listed machine conditions are active and no other conditions are present that would cause the ECM to activate the Economy Mode.

Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Perform Main Pump Testing

A. Test that the maximum engine and maximum main pump power are correct. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, UENR5282, "Main Pump - Test".
If the test values do not meet proper specifications, further testing will be needed. Follow all recommendations to help determine the root cause of the poor hydraulic response symptom.

Hydraulic testing and adjustments have been performed and have improved the hydraulic operation of the machine.
OK - Hydraulic testing has been performed and has resulted in improved response of the hydraulic operation of the machine

Proceed to Test Step 5.

NOT OK -Hydraulic testing has been performed. The hydraulic operation of the machine is still not correct.

Repair:The ECM and the electrical components appear to be operating correctly. The problem may be caused by the hydraulic components on the machine.
Refer to the Service Manual for your machine and check the documentation for the hydraulic operation of the machine.
After hydraulic system repairs or adjustments are performed, the Main Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid Calibration must be performed in order to enable superior performance.
Checking the operation of the hydraulic components on the machine. If the problem is still present, flash the ECM with the latest version of software. Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program" section of this manual for the correct procedure.
If the problem is still present after flashing the latest software to your ECM, contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for consultation with Caterpillar.

Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check For Active Diagnostic Codes

A. Check for any active CID 1629 (Main Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid) diagnostic code or CID 1630 (Swing Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid) diagnostic code.
OK - An active CID 1629 (Main Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid) diagnostic code or an active CID 1630 (Swing Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid) diagnostic code is present.

Repair: The ECM will not activate the Power Mode with one of these diagnostic codes active. Proceed to the troubleshooting procedure in this manual for the active CID 1629 or CID 1630 diagnostic code. When the code is cleared, the ECM will activate the Power Mode.

STOP

NOT OK - An active CID 1629 (Main Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid) diagnostic code or an active CID 1630 (Swing Pump Power Shift Pressure Solenoid) diagnostic code is not present.

Repair:The electrical components on the machine are most likely not the cause of the problem. Refer to Troubleshooting, KENR5429, "C4.4 and C6.6 Engines For Caterpillar Built Machines" for troubleshooting the engine performance.
