Start By:

  1. Separate the torque converter from the transmission and the output transfer gears.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.



NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Position torque converter assembly (1) onto suitable cribbing. The weight of torque converter assembly (1) is approximately 242 kg (534 lb).

  2. Remove bolts (2) and the washers.

  3. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to torque converter housing (3). The weight of torque converter housing (3) is approximately 120 kg (265 lb).

  4. Install Tooling (B). Use Tooling (B) in order to loosen torque converter housing (3) from the torque converter.

  5. Use Tooling (A) and the suitable lifting device in order to remove torque converter housing (3) from the torque converter.

  6. Remove O-ring seal (4) from pump adapter (5).

  7. Remove bolts (6) and the washers from pump adapter (5).

  8. Use Tooling (C) in order to remove pump adapter (5) from torque converter housing (3).

  9. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove bearing cup (6) from pump adapter (5).

  10. Remove O-ring seal (8) and shims (7) from pump adapter (5).

  11. Remove adapter (9) and the O-ring seal.

  12. Remove drive gear (10).

  13. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove bearing cup (11) from torque converter housing (3).

  14. Use Tooling (E) in order to remove bearing cones (12) from each side of drive gear (10).

  15. Remove manifold (13) and the O-ring seal.

  16. Remove relief valve body (14) and the two O-ring seals.

  17. Remove bolt (15) and the washer from torque converter housing (3).

  18. Use Tooling (F) in order to push shaft assembly (19) (not shown) out of torque converter housing (3).

  19. Remove idler gear (16) from torque converter housing (3).

  20. Remove spring pins (17).

  21. Remove O-ring seal (18).

  23. Remove bearing cone (21), bearing cone spacer (22), and bearing cone (23) from idler gear (16).

  24. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove bearing cup (24) from idler gear (16).

  28. Reposition torque converter (28), as shown, onto suitable cribbing. The weight of torque converter (28) is approximately 118 kg (260 lb).

  29. Remove bolts (29) and the washers. Use two people in order to remove clutch housing assembly (30). The weight of clutch housing assembly (30) is approximately 26 kg (57 lb).

  30. Remove plug assemblies (31) and the O-ring seal from clutch housing assembly (30). Remove plug (33).

  31. Remove ring (32) from clutch housing assembly (30).

  32. Remove piston (34) from clutch housing assembly (30).

  33. Remove bearing sleeve (35) from clutch housing assembly (30).

  34. Remove seal rings (36) from piston (34).

  39. Remove bolts (43) and the nuts. Remove cover (44) from coupling assembly (41). Remove springs (45).

    Note: Note the orientation of springs (45) for assembly purposes.

  40. Remove thrust bearing race (46), thrust bearing (47), and race (48).

  42. Install two bolts (40), as shown, through turbine (51) and into turbine hub (52). Remove turbine (51) and turbine hub (52) as one unit.

    Note: Mark the orientation of flywheel springs (61) for assembly purposes.

  49. Flip stator (57) over and remove retaining ring (63). Remove plate (64) and freewheel cam (65).

  51. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to impeller (67). The weight of impeller (67) is approximately 35 kg (77 lb). Use Tooling (A) and the suitable lifting device in order to remove impeller (67) from shaft assembly (68).
