SE60 VT XW and SE60 V XW Asphalt Screed Machine Systems Caterpillar

Screed Plates - Check/Replace and Adjust - Main Screed

Usage:

SE60VT XW E99

------ WARNING! ------

Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.

Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

------ WARNING! ------

In order to prevent personal injury from accidental screed movement, lock the screed in the RAISED position by using the service lock lever to extend the lock pins after the screed is fully raised.

Introduction

This procedure outlines the methods used to level the main screed plate. The main screed should be adjusted after replacement of the screed plate or as required during normal operation.

Test Preparation

  1. Drive the machine to a smooth, horizontal surface. Refer to the tractor Operation and Maintenance manual for the proper operating procedure.

  2. Raise the screed and allow the tow arms to rest on two screed service locks (1).

    Illustration 2g03670072

  3. Lower the right and left tow points (2) to the lowest point.

    Illustration 3g03670077

  4. Use Tool (C) to measure the distance between barrel (3) of the tow point cylinder and the end of cylinder rod (4). If the distance is not equal, adjust the tow points as required until both sides are equal.

Check Procedure

    Illustration 4g03669496

  1. Use Tool (C) to measure the distance between drop arm face (5) and slope box face (6). The distance should be 480 mm (19 inch) on both sides of the screed.

    Illustration 5g03703625

  2. If the distance is incorrect loosen locknut (7), if necessary.

    Illustration 6g03670014

    Illustration 7g03714827

  3. Use thickness screw adjustment handle (8) to set the face to face measurement to 480 mm (19 inch).

Note: Screeds equipped with the tamper option use knob (9) to set the face to face measurement.

  4. Tighten locknut (7).

  5. Verify that there is zero crown in the main screed.

      Illustration 8g03645001

    1. Place Tool (A) across the width of main screed plate (10) approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) behind the leading edge.

    2. Place two of Tool (B) between Tool (A) and the screed plate. Locate each Tool (B) approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) from the ends of main screed plate (10).

      Illustration 9g03669446

    3. Use a third Tool (B) as a gauge in order to check the gap between the screed plate and Tool (A). This check should be taken at the center of main screed plate (10).

    Illustration 10g03645091

  6. Use crown increase switch (12) and crown decrease switch (11) to adjust the crown. The space between Tool (A) and Tool (B) should be equal at all three locations.

    Illustration 11g03645030

  7. Place Tool (A) across the width of main screed (10) approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) in front of the trailing edge.

  8. Place two of Tool (B) between Tool (A) and the screed plate. Locate each Tool (B) below the first adjuster at each end of main screed plate (10).

    Illustration 12g03720805

  9. Use a third Tool (B) as a gauge in order to check the gap between the main screed plate and Tool (A). This check should be taken below each adjuster. Check from the outer edges of the main screed plate to the center of main screed plate (10).

  10. If the trailing edge of the screed plate is flat and straight, go to Step 11. If the trailing edge of the main screed plate is not flat and straight, go to "Adjustment Procedure", "Trailing Edge Adjustment".

  11. Remove tooling.

Adjustment Procedure

Trailing Edge Adjustment

    Illustration 13g03719454

  1. Use extender proportional extender switch (13) to extend the right and left extenders.

    Illustration 14g03713713

  2. Remove two bolts (15) and washers. Remove plate (14).

    Illustration 15g03670108

  3. Retract the inner trailing edge adjusters (17) and outer trailing edge adjusters (16).

  4. Use inner trailing edge adjusters (17) to set the flatness of the trailing edge. Do not disturb outer trailing edge adjusters (16). Start at the second trailing edge adjuster in from each side and move to the center.

    Illustration 16g03669955

  5. Loosen nut (18) on top of inner trailing edge adjusters (17) only. Turn the trailing edge adjuster counter-clockwise to retract the adjuster. Turn the trailing edge adjuster clockwise to extend the adjuster. Flatten the trailing edge of the main screed plate relative to Tool (A).

  6. Tighten nut (18).

  7. Remove tooling.

  8. Position plate (14) and secure with two bolts (15) and washers.

Reset the Scales

    Illustration 17g03671629

  1. Loosen bolts (20) and move indicator (21) to the zero mark on thickness scale (19). Tighten the bolts.

  2. Loosen bolts (24) and move crown scale (23) so the zero mark aligns with pointer (22).
