PROBLEM

The fuel spill containment group on certain C27 and C32 Generator Sets may allow water to enter the spill bucket. Since the spill bucket drains into the main fuel tank, the potential exists for water to enter the fuel tank.

Rework Procedure

Important Safety Information

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.

A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction, on the product, and in this product's Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM). If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.

Therefore, the warnings in this publication, the warnings that are on the product, and the warnings that are in the OMM are not all inclusive. If a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used, the user must ensure that it is safe for the user and for other people to use.

The user should ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures that are used.

WARNING: The generator set must be isolated electrically before and while the rework is performed. Follow the proper lockout tag out procedures to protect against the unexpected energizing or startup of the generator set. Failure to follow these warnings could result in injury to personnel during service. Attach a "Do Not Operate" warning tag to the machine start switch or the controls before you perform any service to the machine.

1) Remove the new spill containment unit (430-6294-02) from it's packaging and inspect. Verify lock tab is located outside of the containment bowl as shown in Image 1.2.1.

Note: Containment group will be powder coated black.

2) Remove existing spill containment unit from fuel tank using suitable tooling. Existing spill containment has lock tab on the inside of bowl as shown in Image 1.3.1. The lock tab location could possibly allow water intrusion.

3) Apply an even coat of petroleum resistant/compatible thread sealant on the threads of the outlet of the unit.

4) Place the spill containment unit on top of the tank carefully, not to damage the containment and/or the tank in preparation to connect it to the tank.

5) Using the proper equipment to work on the top of the tank, and following the appropriate safety precautions, place the outlet pipe of the spill containment unit in the appropriate fitting on top of the tank. Thread the unit by hand turning it clockwise until the threads of the spill containment are fully engaged with the fitting on the tank.

6) Using an appropriate wrench, tighten the spill containment by placing the wrench on the outlet pipe just above the threaded portion and turn it clockwise to tighten to 50 to 75 ft-lbs.

7) Image 1.8.1 shows the spill containment unit properly installed.
