Cat® Terrain for drilling onboard software version 6.9 is now available for download from https://mining.cat.com/terrainsupport. This Service Magazine article summarizes the improvements that are included in Terrain for drilling version 6.9 onboard software. This new image replaces the former version 6.8.1 that was released August 2012.

Customers who wish to upgrade from v6.8.1 or earlier must use Terrain for Drilling base image v6.9. Terrain for Drilling base image v6.8.1 will no longer be available.

If you are performing a new installation on a drill model that is supported, ensure to use the latest version, 6.9. Refer to the media listed above for the procedures for the setup and configuration of Terrain for drilling.

Accessing the Software

Perform the following procedure to access the "DrillBase69.img.zip" software file:

  1. Open a web browser and type "https://cat.mining.com" in the address field.

  1. Log in to the site with a CWS username and password.

  1. Click on the "Support" menu.

  1. Click on "Mining Technology & Autonomy" section and then select "Terrain".

  1. Click on "Terrain 1.2 Release Downloads & Documentation" under the "What's New" section.

The "Terrain for Drilling Install Package" link is available under "Terrain for Drilling (on-board v6.9)".

Upgrade to the Latest Version

An upgrade from the current version should be considered for the following reasons:

  • Terrain office version 1.2 is implemented on the mine site and the current drill system version is lower than 6.9.

  • A mine site is using Terrain office v1.1 (or later) and Fleet v3.1 and drilled holes are displayed as gray on the map screen instead of green for holes drilled by self or blue when drilled by another drill with the drill-to-drill hole update feature.

  • A drill machine uses a TC900 radio with RTCM3 corrections over a serial connection.

Refer to the Systems Operation, KENR8653, "Terrain for Drilling Setup and Configuration Guide" for procedures on performing an upgrade.

New Features

The improved software has the following new features:

  • Support for use with Terrain office v1.2 which include the following features:

(a) Enhanced Consumables - Detailed consumable lists are prepared from the office and then sent to the onboard. This feature includes an improved graphical user interface for the operator to input additional information about consumables directly from the onboard.

(b) Location Based Project Request - A button is now available in the Map screen for the drill operator to request a new design map from the office. The office will then send a design map to the drill based on the current geographic location of the machine.

  • Support for Drill Health with machines that have an RCS system with the use of Fleet v3.1 as office communication.

  • Support for use with the Cat Machine Simulator software.

The base image now includes for selection, a drill interface of a generic blast hole drill and an articulated drill that are configured for use with the Cat Machine Simulator software. Either drill interface may be selected to install for use with the Cat Machine Simulator software.

  • Support for RTCM3 corrections over a serial connection with a TC900 radio.

  • Improved support for the number of vertices for a polygon artifact. A polygon shape may be up to 150 vertices.

Improved Issues

The following improvements have been addressed in version 6.9:

  • Gray hole issue

Previously, on sites where Terrain office v1.1 (or later) and Fleet v3.1 are installed and Terrain is configured to communicate with machines through the Field Communication Monitor bridge with Fleet v3.1 and the option to send position awareness messages is disabled, drilled holes would display in gray on the map screen instead of green for holes drilled by own drill or blue when drilled by another drill with the drill-to-drill hole update feature enabled.

This issue is resolved with limitations. Currently, when the office resends the map information to the drill system, drilled holes now display in blue - as if drilled by another drill when in fact the hole may have been drilled by self.

  • When the Background button is set to hide background information, the alarm artifacts (Bootleg, Forbidden Line, Border) and non-alarm artifacts (if applicable) that are created in Terrain office are now hidden. Previously, when the state was set to hide background information, only alarm artifacts that were from an .AQM source would be hidden. The background button now functions correctly, with the ability to hide artifacts from both sources.

  • Improved performance on the Navigator in cases where the onboard receives corrections from a serial port.
