MH3049 Material Handler Caterpillar

Magnet Operation - If Equipped

Usage:

MH3049 HPB

------ WARNING! ------

Never connect or disconnect the magnet unless the engine is shut down and the main switch for the generator is in the OFF position.

Failure to follow this procedure may result in personal injury or death.

------ WARNING! ------

The grapple or the magnet can swing in all directions. Personal injury can result if the attachment swings into the cab or a person in the work area.

------ WARNING! ------

Before making any adjustments to the generator the engine must be shut off and the main disconnect switch on the controller must be in the off position. Personal injury can occur.

Close all controller panel doors before the generator is started. Personal injury can occur.

Never handle the leads to the magnet unless the generator is stopped and the main disconnect switch on the controller is in the off position. Personal injury can occur.

------ WARNING! ------

Failure to comply to the rated load can cause personal injury or work tool damage.

Review the rated load of a particular work tool before performing any operation. Make adjustments to the rated load as necessary for non standard configurations.

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent injury, do not exceed the rated load capacity of the machine. If the machine is not on level ground, load capacities will vary.

------ WARNING! ------

Know the maximum height and the maximum reach of your machine. Serious injury or death by electrocution can occur if the machine or the work tools are not kept a safe distance from electrical power lines. Keep a distance of at least 3000 mm (118 inch) plus an additional 10 mm (0.4 inch) for each 1000 volts over 50000 volts.

------ WARNING! ------

Know the maximum height and the maximum reach of your machine. Serious injury or death by electrocution can occur if the machine or the work tools are not kept a safe distance from electrical power lines. Keep a distance of at least 3 m (10 ft) plus an additional 10 mm (0.5 inch) for each 1000V over 50000V.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not leave the controls unattended while a load is suspended. No person shall be permitted to stand or pass under a suspended load or work tool. A suspended load or work tool may fall causing injury or death.

------ WARNING! ------

Never operate a magnet with a direct electrical short to case. Any person making contact with such a magnet could receive an electrical shock, resulting in injury or death.

All personnel should stay clear of the magnet when the generator is activated.

Improper use of the magnet may damage machine compartments. Only use the magnet for lifting applications.

The hydraulic motor drives the generator and the generator supplies power to the magnet. The generator is turned on and off by the enable magnet button. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Magnet Controls" for additional information.

Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Joystick Controls" for information about using the joystick controls for the magnet.

Set the magnet on the material and then activate the generator. Allow the magnet to build magnetism for a few seconds before lifting material. Activating the generator before the magnet reaches the material may cause the magnet to overheat and reduce the rated load.

Always monitor the generator voltage and the magnet temperature when operating the generator and magnet.

Do not exceed the rated duty cycle of the magnet. Exceeding the rated duty cycle reduces lifting capacity because of excessive heat buildup in the magnet.

Do not lift loads higher than necessary.

Do not clean the magnet or generator with water or liquid.

Do not attempt to lower the temperature of the magnet with water or liquid.

Do not modify the generator or magnet.

Store the magnet off the ground when not in use.

For additional information, consult your Cat dealer.

Generator Drop Time

The generator drop time can be adjusted from the "Service Intervals" menu in the monitoring system. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Monitoring System".

Note: If the generator is disabled, the generator drop time will not be displayed on the "Service Intervals" menu. Enable the generator in order to adjust the drop time

The setting of the generator drop time will vary depending on the type of load, the size of the load and the size of the magnet. Use the procedure below in order to achieve the best drop time for a given magnet.

  1. Determine the size of the magnet that is installed on the machine. Also determine the size and weight of the load.

  2. Start with the drop time setting at "3".

  3. Lift the load and drop the load at consecutively higher settings or lower settings until a clean drop is achieved.

If a clean drop is not achieved, increase the drop time. If the load is pulled back into the magnet, decrease the drop time.

Note: Do not use the magnet to work over one object continuously. Consistent work on one object can magnetize an object.
