Prerequisites

Ensure that the following actions are performed prior to installation.

  • Machines have the VIMS 3G ECM or ECMs installed.

  • Caterpillar Inc. recommends that an industrial grade Ethernet radio is used that support communications at 10Mbs or above. The industrial grade Ethernet radio must be compatible with an existing site radio infrastructure.

  • Ensure that VIMS 3G software version 7.2. prod 1 or later is installed. The flash file and configuration currently installed can be found using Cat ET. Updated files versions and compatibility matrix can be found in https://mining.cat.com/vims-software and SIS Web https://sis.cat.com.

  • Communications infrastructure layout. A site IT person familiar with the site radio infrastructure is needed to specify IP addresses for third-party radio network, VIMS 3G Main ECM and for the IP address and directory of the ftp site for file uploads.

  • To provide a secure implementation when connecting VIMS 3G to the Internet, a modem or router that provides access controls must be used. Refer to the Recommended Security Configurations section for further information.

Recommended Security Configurations

To control access to the VIMS 3G Web Interface, Caterpillar recommends using one of the two following methods for securing access to your modem or router when it is accessible from the public Internet. Work with the dealer or site IT department to determine which method is best for this installation. If your radio and infrastructure supports VPN, this is the most secure level available. A secondary method of control is an Access Control List.

VPN

This method works with both Static IP addresses and DHCP. VPN is an encrypted method of communication that only allows private communication between the modem/router on the machine and any gateway that supports VPN. Consult the IT administrator to determine if this method is supported and the specific VPN scheme that can be implemented.

Access Control List

This method works best with Static IP address implementations. A list can be created and uploaded to the modem or router that restricts which IP addresses can communicate with VIMS. Examples of authorized IP addresses would include the IP address of the FTP server or gateway and any authorized computers to connect remotely. This list would need updated any time an IP address changed. If using DHCP, you will need to make sure that the Access Control List can be updated at the same frequency as the DHCP refresh.

Preparation

VIMS 3G is designed to use an Ethernet based radio. The radio type is a customer decision based on the available infrastructure. A radio bench test in the office or shop is advised to set up and test radio communications. An Ethernet switch may also be used to allow simultaneous connection of a radio and VIMS or other devices.

Specific tools and information are required to carry out the setup and the configuration of the VIMS 3G.
