This guideline provides procedures to evaluate rear spindles for reusability, and includes information for salvaging the wheel bearing journals of the spindles.

This guideline provides information, which aids in the determination of final drive planetary carrier reusability.

This guideline serves to replace the following guideline:

Cleaning Recommendations

Components should be cleaned prior to inspection. The surface must be free from rust, grease, oil, and burrs that can mask the indications of unacceptable defects.


NOTICE

Use all cleaning solvents and solutions with care. Wear eye and ear protection when using high-pressure cleaning equipment. Always use cleaning solvents in a well-ventilated area. Always wear protective clothing when using caustic cleaning solutions. Failure to follow the precautions provided by the manufacturer of the cleaning equipment, and/or solvents, can result in bodily injury.

Pressurized air can cause personal injury. When using pressurized air for cleaning or drying parts, wear a protective face shield, protective clothing, and protective shoes. The maximum air pressure must be below 200 kPa (29 psi).


  • Before a part is inspected, clean it thoroughly to remove all debris, paint, and oil.

  • When lifting or moving parts to be cleaned, use proper lifting devices to provide for operator safety, and to prevent part damage.

  • During cleaning, do not damage machined surfaces.

  • Use pressurized air to dry parts. Be sure to use eye protection equipment.

  • If inspection is not done immediately after cleaning, put hydraulic oil on all machined surfaces to prevent rust or corrosion. Carefully store the parts in a clean container.

Planetary Carrier Pin Bore Specifications

Pin Bore Inspection

Bores will usually show a shaft contact area that may be worn slightly. Other damage may include fretting, broaching, adhesive, and impact wear. Carriers should not be reused if any of the following conditions exist:

  • The bore has a wear step that will stop a seal pick.

  • The shaft (pin) has spun in the bore.

  • The bore is elongated or cracked.

  • Significant fretting or broaching damage is present in the bore.

  • The pin bore exceeds the new specifications.

Inspection Procedure

Complete the following steps to inspect the pin bore.

    (1) Pin bore that has not been cleaned.

  1. Clean the pin bore thoroughly before inspecting.

    Note: Pin bores and shafts (pins) can be cleaned with parts cleaner and a non-metallic scouring pad that will not remove metal.

  1. Visually inspect the bore for damage and wear.

    Note: An adequate light source should be used when inspecting pin bores. An optical magnifier may also be used.

  1. Inspect the bore with a seal pick in order to detect any wear steps.

    Refer to Table 29 through Table 17 for a summary of the pin bore specifications.


NOTICE

Pin bore wear beyond new specifications is not permitted. Once wear begins, progression to complete failure can be rapid.

Final Drive Gear Reusability

Sun and Planet Gears

Sun and planet gears in the final drives are heavily loaded. Inspect all the gears carefully to insure that all reuse standards are met. Refer to Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8193, "Reusability of Drive Train Gears" for additional information related to final drive gears.

Planet Gear Bore Reusability

Planet gears with bores that function as a bearing outer race require special attention to the presence of corrosion/rust or foreign material damage.

The heating/cooling cycles encountered by the final drive during normal machine operation can draw moisture or water into a final drive compartment, especially if the seals are worn or leaking. The moisture can then cause corrosion or rust on the bearing races and rollers ranging from a harmless stain to destructive pits. Improper cleaning and storage can also cause corrosion or rust.

Extreme Pressure (EP) lubricants can also cause corrosion, and are not recommended for use in Caterpillar final drives.

Check the bores of all planet gears for other surface distress (cracks, pits, and so on).

Refer to Table 6 through Table 31 for the Planetary Gear Bore reusability dimensions.

Foreign material passing through the bearing can cause indentations in the contact face. Although the surface may not have been initially cracked, ridges were raised around the indentation. Stresses caused by the bearing rollers passing over the ridges can cause premature spalling.

Fretting may occur on shafts duo to carrier surface contact. Shafts can be reused if less than 50% of the contact width and 25% of the shaft diameter is affected and the shaft measurements are within specifications. Refer to Table 9 through Table 11 for specifications.

Final Drive Spindle, Axle Shaft, and Hub Spline Reusability

Spline Inspection General Guidelines

The spindles, axle shafts, and splines must be inspected prior to any salvage repair. These splines are subject to high loads, which makes accurate inspection essential. Splines should be inspected immediately after removal. If not, put hydraulic oil on each machined surface to prevent rust or corrosion. Generally, cracked spindles and cracked axle shafts should not be used again. Cracked splines should never be reused. Refer to Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8083, "Inspection and Salvage of Wheel Spindles for all Off-Highway Trucks" for additional information.

Note: Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8083 is prepared for Off-Highway Trucks, however, the general principles presented may be applied to WL spindle reuse decisions.

Always use proper lifting devices for operator safety and to prevent machined surface damage. Safety glasses should be worn at all times for the protection of the operator.

Failure Progression

The key element to analyzing damage on final drive splines is determining if the damage will progress to a failure before the next overhaul. Analyze the application of the truck and spline size when making this determination.

There are two typical failure progressions:

  • Spline wear or misalignment fracture

  • Fatigue cracking leading to fracture

Wear and Misalignment

Spline wear is the result of relative motion between mating spline teeth. High loading, insufficient lube, vibration, and abrasives may result in wear. Typically, splines can be reused if less than 0.2 mm (0.01 inch) wear step exists. When spline wear is excessive, joint movement increases causing misalignment and imbalance increasing the speed of spline destruction. Excess clearance between splines will also create shock loading during speed, load, and/or direction changes.

There is normally a small amount of relative motion between mating spline teeth. Uneven contact patterns on spline teeth are the result of misalignment of one or both of the mating splines. When the spline teeth are misaligned, they are no longer fully engaged. This means that only a portion of each tooth is carrying the full load. Misalignment of teeth causes high contact pressures on the portion of the tooth carrying the load. Thus, surface damage associated with high contact pressures and relative movement will be seen as spline wear and fretting. Misalignment can be identified by the uneven contact pattern on the spline teeth.

Spline misalignment can be caused by worn or damaged bearings, carrier (hub) bores, carrier faces, or shafts. If any spline displays uneven contact patterns, be sure to check for misalignment and correct the problem.

Fatigue Cracks - Spline Teeth

Numerous broken spline teeth may be the result of bending fatigue failure. The operational loads create tensile stress in the fillet area on the loaded side of the tooth. With enough high loads and cycles, these stresses can cause fatigue cracks. After a fatigue crack develops, the crack will continue to progress until the tooth is sufficiently weakened and separates from the parent metal. Cracking can also occur between the root of the tooth and a bolt hole or inside diameter of the part.

Visual Inspection

Splines can be visually inspected with the naked eye. To provide the best inspection results, a magnifying lens and a strong light source (sunlight is best) is recommended. Small cracks and small scratches may be difficult to distinguish. In these cases, use a liquid magnetic particle inspection system or a dye penetrant system.

Be sure to inspect EVERY spline. If a damaged spline is found, all mating splines and splines 180 degrees from the damaged spline should be reinspected for possible bending fatigue, cracks, and wear.

Note: When using a magnetic particle inspection system or a dye penetrant system, thoroughly clean the part and follow all instructions carefully or some cracks may be missed.

Splines with misalignment damage should not be used again even after correcting the cause of the misalignment. The previous abnormal wear would not permit full tooth contact and would result in high contact pressures.

If the splines are worn enough to stop the seal pick as it is being pushed across the worn to unworn area, measure the splines before reuse. Generally, a 0.152 mm (0.0060 inch) wear step will stop a seal pick.

The pins used in these inspection procedures must be machined for each individual spline, set according to specified dimensions. Pins should be machined from SAE1020 steel and processed through a magnetizing operation (allows the pins to stay in place during inspection). To perform the inspection on all spline sets covered in this guideline, will require 12 sets of pins. Care must be taken to precisely machine these pins to specification due to the close tolerances of the pin diameters.

Use the following procedure to determine the maximum allowable spline wear:

  1. Determine the wear on each spline using an inside or an outside micrometer depending on the spline being inspected. To obtain accurate results, the individual performing the check must have a thorough working knowledge of the use of both inside and outside micrometers.

  1. Place the pins at 60 degree intervals. The pins should be magnetized or retained by a rubber band to prevent movement .

    (7) Outside micrometer

  1. The micrometer must be positioned to measure the highest external and internal two points on the pins. This measurement will provide the wear reading on the spline. The pin diameter for each individual part is specified in that particular procedure. The "Print Spec Over Pins" must be taken every 60 degrees and the readings are added and divided by three. The "Maximum Difference Between High/Low" must also be determined because an out of round condition will cause poor load distribution on the spline teeth.

Measurement Examples

Internal Spline

Place pins at 60 degree intervals on the carrier. The location of the pins at 60 degree intervals is critical to the formula. These three locations will provide information about the wear of the part.

For example purposes only, Step 1 through Step 4 demonstrates the calculations required to check the measurements of an internal spline at 60 degree intervals. This example uses a 175-7527 Hub from a 936E. Refer to Table 15 for specifications.

  1. Take measurements at the locations as shown in Illustration 35. These measurements were as follows:

    (D) = 100.550 mm (3.9587 inch)

    (E) = 100.610 mm (3.9610 inch)

    (F) = 100.620 mm (3.9614 inch)

  1. Once all three readings are obtained, add the readings, (D) + (E) + (F) = 301.78 mm (11.881 inch).

  1. Now divide the result by three to obtain the average, 301.78 ÷ 3 mm (11.881 ÷ 3 inch) = 100.593 mm (3.9604 inch). This calculated dimension is less than the "Max Reuse Dimension Over Pins" of 100.625 mm (3.9616 inch) and passes this requirement.

  1. The difference between the high and the low measurements gives an indication of whether the splines are out of round, which can cause uneven load distribution on the splines. Take the high measurement,100.620 mm (3.9614 inch) and low measurement,100.550 mm (3.9587 inch) and calculate the difference. The difference between the two measurements also determines if the part can be used again.

    • 100.620 - 100.550 mm (3.9614 - 3.9587 inch)

    = 0.070 mm (0.0028 inch)

    Table 15 designates a Maximum Difference Between High/Low measurements of 0.101 mm (0.0040 inch) and the actual difference of 0.070 mm (0.0028 inch) is less than the allowable maximum. As the actual difference is less than the allowable maximum, Use again the spline.

    If the Maximum Difference Between High/Low exceeded 0.101 mm (0.0040 inch), the splined component would be elliptical. Do not use again the spline.

    Note: Both the "Reuse Dimension Over Pins" and "Maximum Difference Between High/Low" calculations must be within the specifications given. If the part does not meet both specifications, Do not use again the part.

External Spline

Place pins at 60 degree intervals on the carrier. The location of the pins at 60 degree intervals is critical to the formula. These three locations will provide information about the wear of the part.

  1. Now divide the result by three to obtain the average, 362.884 ÷ 3 mm (14.28674 ÷ 3 inch) = 120.961 mm (4.7622 inch). This calculated dimension is greater than the "Min Reuse Dimension Over Pins" of120.887 mm (4.7593 inch) and passes this requirement.

  1. The difference between the high and the low measurements gives an indication of whether the splines are out of round, which can cause uneven load distribution on the splines. Take the high measurement, 121.008 mm (4.7641 inch) and low measurement, 120.886 mm (4.7593 inch) and calculate the difference. The difference between the two measurements also determines if the spline can be used again.

    • 121.008 - 120.886 mm (4.7641 - 4.7593 inch)

    = 0.122 mm (0.0048 inch)

    Table 13 designates a Maximum Difference Between High/Low measurements of 0.121 mm (0.0048 inch) and the actual difference of 0.122 mm (0.0048 inch) is more than the allowable maximum. This spline is elliptical and Do not use again the spline.

Wheel Bearing Bore and Bearing Journal Reusability

Bearing bores and bearing journals should be checked for reusability. Tractors with outboard final drives have bearings that mount between the wheel and the hub or the spindle. Tractors with inboard final drives have bearings that mount between the axle shaft and axle housing. The spindle, hub, and axle shaft bearing journals as well as the wheel and axle housing bearing bores should be checked for wear at each rebuild. If the journals or bores have pronounced wear, the bearings will have a sloppy fit and further wear will occur rapidly.

Inspection

Spindles, hubs, axle shafts, wheels, and axle housings should have "like new" dimensions or wear will occur. Visually inspect all bearing bores and bearing journals. In addition to the visual inspection, measures the bearing bores and bearing journals to verify that the component meets the resue criteria presented in Table 23 through Table 35. If the part contains cracks, exhibits bruising, scratching, and/or spalling, Do not use again without first completing the appropriate salvage operation.

Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8083, "Inspection and Salvage of Wheel Spindles for all Off-Highway Trucks" for information regarding typical spindle wear occurrences and reuse scenarios.

Visual Inspection

Wheel bearing bores and journals can be inspected with the naked eyes. To provide the best inspection results, a magnifying lens and a strong light source (sunlight is best) are recommended. It can also be difficult to distinguish between small scratches and small cracks. In these cases, use a liquid magnetic particle inspection system or a dye penetration system.

Outboard Type - Spindle and Hub Bearing Journal Wear Limits

For outboard type WL there are two ways the bearings mount to the spindle: either directly to the spindle, or to the hub, which mounts to the spindle. If the bearing mounts to the hub, the spindle should still be checked for wear where the hub mounts to the spindle. If the spindle has wear characteristics depicted in Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8083, "Inspection and Salvage of Wheel Spindles for all Off-Highway Trucks", the spindle may be salvaged using thermal spray technologies. Refer to Special Instruction, SEBF9238, "Fundamentals of Arc Spray for Reconditioning Components", Special Instruction, SEBF9240, "Fundamentals of Flame Spray for Reconditioning Components", or Special Instruction, SEBF9236, "Fundamentals of HVOF Spray for Reconditioning Components" for appropriate thermal spray information. Upon completing the salvage procedure, the spindle should meet "like new" dimensions. Refer to Table 23 through Table 25 for the appropriate spindle dimensions.

Bearings that mount to the hub are of the type shown in Illustration 40. The bearing mounts to the hub at (C). The hub should be inspected and measured along with the spindle. If the hub does not meet "like new" condition and/or has abrasive or adhesive wear, it can be thermal sprayed and remachined to "like new" dimensions and used again. Dimension (C) is given in Table 26 through Table 28.

Outboard Type Wheel Bearing Bore Wear Limits

Determine the maximum allowable wear of the wheel assembly bearing cup bore with the following procedure:

  1. Measure the inside diameter of the wheel bore.

  1. Refer to Table 29 through Table 31 and verify that the measurement is within specifications.

  1. If there is pronounced wear or the bore is not within the specifications, the wheel must be replaced or salvaged. In order to salvage the wheel bore, refer toSpecial Instruction, SEBF9238, "Fundamentals of Arc Spray for Reconditioning Components", Special Instruction, SEBF9240, "Fundamentals of Flame Spray for Reconditioning Components", or Special Instruction, SEBF9236, "Fundamentals of HVOF Spray for Reconditioning Components" for appropriate thermal spray information.

For inboard type WL the bearings mount directly to the axle housing. Axle shafts should be checked using the same procedure as an outboard type spindle. Measure axle shafts at (A) and (B). Determine the maximum allowable wear of the axle housing bearing cup bore with the following procedure:

  1. Measure the inside diameter of the axle housing bore (A) and (B) .

  1. Refer to Table 34 through Table 35 and verify that the measurement is within specifications.

  1. If there is pronounced wear or the bore is not within specifications, the axle housing must be replaced or salvaged. In order to salvage the axle housing bore, refer toSpecial Instruction, SEBF9238, "Fundamentals of Arc Spray for Reconditioning Components", Special Instruction, SEBF9240, "Fundamentals of Flame Spray for Reconditioning Components", or Special Instruction, SEBF9236, "Fundamentals of HVOF Spray for Reconditioning Components".
