CAESoffice refers to two locations for the data that is displayed:

"METS" Directory - Site and the machine-related information and the snippet directories for the machine

"CAES" Directory - Copies of as-built surface files

Note: Copies of the as-built surface files are created in the "CAES " directory from the as-built surface files in the "METS" directories. Using the original files in the "METS" directories prevents METSmanager from writing new snippet data from the machines to the as-built surface files. The buildup of unprocessed snippets can cause complications with METSmanager.

The copying of the as-built surface files is automatically carried out once CAESoffice is started. This process occurs in the background. No configuration is required.

After completing the entry of the security keys, the user is prompted to configure the location of the "METS" and the "CAES " directories in the "Set System Settings" dialog.

Configuring the CAES Productivity Conversion Service

The CAES Productivity Conversion Service is installed as part of the CAES Office Suite installation.

ReferenceFor more information regarding the CAES Productivity Conversion Service, refer to the "Productivity File Conversion Service" section in the "Release Notes".

The Productivity Conversion Service help file can be found in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\ProdConvertService\ CAES-PCS.chm

The following procedure will need to be performed for every machine production folder that is to be uploaded into the new database. Use only the last 6 months to a year of old data to convert into the new format.

After the CAES Productivity Conversion Service is installed, the service will need to be configured.

Only perform this procedure if upgrading and the past 6 months or year of data is needed in the new reporting system. The old Report Generator reports will need to be utilized for older information.

The Productivity Conversion Service will only convert production versions of CAES files from the following versions: v2004.1, v3.1.047, and v3.1.110. These versions are the last three production releases of software.

  1. Go to the following directory:

    C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\ProdConvertService\

  1. Open the "config.ini" file and leave this file open.

  1. Go to the following directory:

    C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\Uploader\Archive\

Note: This directory is the default location where the old "*.csv" files are stored that need to be converted into the new "*.prod" format.

    Illustration 31g01820258

  1. Set up the "$InputDir#" and the "$ArchiveDir#" for each machine from Step 3 as shown in Illustration 31. An example follows:

    $InputDir1 = C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\ Uploader\Archive\00200\product\2009

    $ArchiveDir1 = C:\Program Files\Caterpillar \Uploader\Archive\00200\product\2009csv

Note: Each "$InputDir#" key and "$ArchiveDir#" key is paired by placing the same number in place of the "#." If these numbers do not have a pair, and the numbers are not sequential, then this conversion function will not work.

    Illustration 32g01800020

  1. Set up the "$InputDir#" key and the "$ArchiveDir#" key for the "metsdata\Office Productivity" directory from Step 3 as shown in Illustration 32.

  1. If the site is a MineStar site, then set up the $InputDir# key and the $ArchiveDir# key for the MineStar directory.

  1. Set up the "$ Point Type Description #" key for each point that the site is using. Refer to the machine configuration file in the "Points Enhanced" section to determine the current list of "Point Type Description".

Note: The "Point Type Descriptions" will convert the old format of a point # to the new format of a point name when the file is converted.

  1. Open Windows Explorer.

  1. Go to the following directory and create each of the new "Archive" directories that are called out in Step 4, Step 5, and Step 6:

    C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\Uploader\Archive

For example, under the "machine 00200\product", create the "2009csv" folder.

Note: If converting past years, then repeat Step 4 through Step 9 for each additional year.

  1. Save and close the "config.ini" file.

  1. Confirm that the Productivity Conversion Service is running by launching the following program:

    C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\ProdConvertService\ ProdConvertSErviceUI.exe

A green light should appear in the lower right corner of your monitor within the Windows system tray if the Productivity Conversion Service is running.

CAES v3.2.3 Release Notes

METSmanger and METScomms

Enhanced Spike Detection

Illustration 58g02403276

In METSmanager > Site > Properties there is a new section called "Site Elevation Extents" with Maximum and Minimum entry fields for elevation. These fields define the maximum and minimum elevation for cells within surfaces such as Original Ground, Current Elevation, and Compaction.

METScomms checks for spikes in the following two ways:

  • Every time METScomms starts, existing surface files are checked for spikes.

  • As new snippets arrive, the snippets are checked for spikes.

Checking surface files

Every time METScomms starts, the existing surface files in all the group directories that exist under the following directory are checked:

C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\METSmanagerDATA\metsdata\caes

METScomms checks that the elevations of every cell do not exceed the elevation limits. If a spike is detected within the surface file, a directory named "Spike" is created under the group directory.

Checking snippets

A directory named Spike is automatically created under the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\METSmanagerDATA\ metsdata\snippets

When snippets are to be accumulated and appended into the surface file, METScomms checks the following: METScomms checks each cell in the snippet file to ensure that the elevations do not exceed the elevation limits.

METScomms reporting

If spikes are detected in the file, an event is reported in the METScomms event log. If spikes are not detected in the surface file, an event is reported in METScomms event log.

File Transfer Protocol from the Office

The option to select between radio protocols is no longer available in v3.2.3. The option is set at install and cannot be changed unless you uninstall and reinstall the software.

Illustration 59g02404897

"Site Properties" dialog

A new "Communications Method" field that indicates the communications protocol has been added to the METSmanager "Site Properties" dialog. The non-editable "Communications Method" field shows KEA, FTP, or UDP.

FTP Server

Improvements have been made to prevent FTP communications and FTP Server from locking up. CAESultra now monitors the FTP communications, and if no information is transferred over a connection for a specified amount of time, that connection is closed.

METSmanager Out of Service

In METSmanager, the "In Service" and "Out of Service" machine function is specifically for the KEA communications system. For UDP and FTP systems, leave all machines set to "In Service". If a machine is set to "Out of Service", file transfers may remain in the communications queue. These file transfers cannot be canceled while a machine is out of service

Touch Screen Check Box

The Touch Screen check box is no longer available from the Machine Properties dialog in METSmanager or when a new machine is created. METSmanager now sets the configuration to be a touch screen.

Rename Option not Processing - Resolved

When using the Rename option in METSdiag, the command was never processed on the machine. The error message "Permission Denied" appeared in the METScomms window and in the METSmanager message window.

The rename command now processes correctly.

CAESultra - $ Snip Enable Key

Time Used for Snippets Without Time

Surfaces without time are not supported by CAESultra v3.2.3. Users should remove any "$ Snip Enable" keys that are used to configure surfaces without time.

If snippets are configured without time, CAESultra will attempt to record a date for each cell. The date that is recorded is defined by the following order:

  1. The time at which the cell was written to the snippet file. This time should be within seconds of actually driving over the cell.

  1. If for some reason a time is not available, the following time is used: 23:59:59 on 31December 1969.

Minimum interval for snippets

The valid range for $ Snip Enable interval is 7-65535. The minimum rate for snippets is dependent on many factors, however the absolute minimum recommendations are as follows:

Multicast Snippets - 7 seconds

Non-multicast (office bound) snippets - 30 seconds

Check the machine configurations to ensure that the current values are within these recommendations.

Position, Accuracy, and Multicast Parameters

In previous versions of CAES, the $ Snip Enable key had three optional parameters at the end of the key. These parameters are: Include Position, Include Accuracy, and Multicast. An example of a $ Snip Enable key with these parameters is as follows:

$ Snip Enable 0 =3 2 2 10000 50000 300 0 1 1 1

The last three "1" values indicate that the Include Position, Include Accuracy, and Multicast options are enabled. Alternatively, "0" values can be used to ensure that these options are disabled.

From v3.2.3 onwards, these parameters must be present for any "$ Snip Enable" key included in the machine configuration file. To be present, either a 0 or a 1 must populate these fields.

Any $ Snip Enable key that is read that does not have these three parameters present is assumed to be a "non multicast" snippet. These parameters include the following and are given the default value of 0 (zero): Exclude Position, Exclude Accuracy, and Non-multicast. In the following example these values are in bold print.

$ Snip Enable 1 =12 2 2 10000 50000 300 00 0 0

Because the Multicast parameter value is 0 (zero), the parameters are reset to the MCU stated default values below:

Normal Size - 1000

Absolute Max Size - 500

Send Time - 300

In the following example, these default values are in bold print.

$ Snip Enable 1 =12 2 2 10000 50000 300 0 0 0 0

If these parameters are configured to any other values, the parameters must be reconfigured manually in the mach_cfg.txt file

This change was made to prevent problems occurring as a result of misconfiguring these settings. The change has minimal effect on radio bandwidth usage.

New Avoidance Transgression Report

For each machine, transgressions are listed in order of date/time. There is also some additional summary information, such as the total number of times in a zone, listed by operator and by shift.

Material Identification Choices - Expanded

There are five types of color used in the CAESultra display for material identification. Hatched color and bitmap are new for v3.2.3.

  • DXF color

  • Mined-out polygons

  • Extended material identities

  • Hatched color

  • Bitmaps

Extended Material Identities are text strings contained within material polygons in a DXF file. Other than Extended Material Identities, all are types are configured in the mach_cfg.txt file.

Hatched Color

The D3:C4 Nav 10.4 Display is limited to a background color and 15 additional colors. Each color represents a different material. Only 15 materials can be represented before a color is repeated for another material.

By applying a wide hatched pattern to the fill color that is used to identify materials, 30 materials can be identified from the plan window before a color is used again.

The following comments apply:

  • To separate one material into two subtypes, associate hatched color with the fill color. This action creates two visual representations of the same material. Examples of two subtypes include two grades of the same ore, two licenses, or two sizes of the same material.

  • Any productivity report based on a specific material type adds data represented by hatched and non-hatched areas together.

  • To separate one material into more than two subtypes, use DXF bitmaps

Illustration 60g02403277

(1) Low Grade Ore

(2) High Grade Ore

Illustration 63 demonstrates hatched color used to differentiate one material (Ore) that has two subtypes. High Grade Ore (1) is defined by the red area that is not hatched. Low Grade Ore (2) is defined by the red hatched polygon.

Note: The material identification hatch pattern is less dense than the Mining in Progress hatch pattern.

Use the following procedure to configure all of the machines on the site with the same hatch color keys:

  1. Manually add the following keys to all of the mach_cfg.txt files in the office.

    • $ Polygon Hatch Color Count =<number>

    • $ Polygon Hatch Color <count>=<color value>

  1. Repeat these keys for each color you want to hatch as in the following example showing three hatched colors:

$ Polygon Hatch Color Count =3

    $ Polygon Hatch Color 0 =5

    $ Polygon Hatch Color 1 =7

    $ Polygon Hatch Color 2 =15

  1. Resend the files to CAESultra.

Use the following procedure to configure hatched color on one or on several machines:

  1. Open the machine folder in the office software.

  1. Manually add the keys to the required mach_cfg.txt files.

  1. Resend the mach_cfg.txt file to the required machine.

Note: The machine configuration files are located in c:\caterpillar\caes\METSdata.

DXF Bitmaps

Bitmap images are used to overlay material colors and give additional information about the material. Bitmap images must be in *.bmp file format.

Custom 5 KB bitmap: HiGrade.

Illustration 61g02404317

In Illustration 64, the custom 5 KB bitmap, HiGrade.bmp, was placed in the caes\data directory onboard. The DXF color number 1, red, was described as Hi Grade. The key$ DXF Bitmap 1 =HiGrade.bmp was added to the machine configuration file.

On the machine, the bitmap appears and the loaded dipper shows the underlying material as red. The digital window (bottom right) also shows the material color as red.

Illustration 62g02404336

Illustrations 64 and 65 represent two different scales. Note however that the bitmap remains the same regardless of the scale that is displayed.

The following comments apply to bitmaps:

  • Any DXF color can have a bitmap assigned. There are 0 to 251 colors available. The same bitmap can be assigned to different colors.

  • CAESultra accepts up to 1MB of bitmaps, based on the bitmap file size.

  • The bitmap is stored in the CAES data directory but not loaded until the machine starts up. To use a new bitmap, restart CAESultra.

  • The bitmap is solid rather than transparent and replaces the color of the material (DXF color) in the plan window.

  • The color of the material, not the bitmap, appears in the bucket and in digital windows.

  • The Mined Out and Mining In Progress state is shown on top of the bitmap.

  • Bitmaps do not interact with Auto Ore Status Maintenance.

  • Adding a new bitmap, which would take the total of all bitmap files on CAESultra above 1MB, causes the bitmap not to load. The error is logged to the DiagMsgLog file. When CAESultra is restarted, the color of the material appears on the plan window instead of the bitmap.

  • If CAESultra cannot find the file, or the file is corrupt, the error is logged to the DiagMsgLog file. When CAESultra is restarted, the color of the material appears on the plan window instead of the bitmap.

Note: To view the DiagMsgLog file, restart CAESultra. The DiagMsgLog file appears in d:\CAES\diag.

Table 27
$ File Activation File Bitmap (CAESultra)
Description:     Enter the path and file name of the custom bitmap image that you want to use with the activation file. This Bitmap image can be configured to appear in CAESultra Toolbars. When this item is selected, the file activation file is applied.
Syntax:     $ File Activation File Bitmap <count> =<bitmap>
Example:     $ File Activation File Bitmap 3 =temp\bench 2550.bmp
The bitmap image named 2550.bmp from the temp directory (c:\caes\temp\) is used for the file activation file button.
Parameter     Description     Possible Values     Default     Data Type     Units
count     Number of the activation file     0 to 4     None     Integer     NA
bitmap     Path and file name of the custom bitmap image     Directory and file name
 (1)
None     String     NA
( 1 ) Value can be up to 255 character for CAESultra. CAES is restricted to 8.3 file names and paths.

Use the following procedure to configure DXF bitmaps on all new or existing machines:

  1. Manually add the following key to the mach_cfg.txt files in the office:

    • $ DXF Bitmap [num] =[filename], where:

    num = 0 to 251

filename = filename of the bitmap in the data directory (not path name)

    Example:

    $ DXF Bitmap 1 =HiGrade.bmp

  1. Resend the files to CAESultra.

Use the following procedure to configure DXF bitmaps on a single machine:

  1. Open the machine folder in the office software

  1. Manually add the key to the required machine.

  1. Manually add the identical key to the first machine in the machine folder.

CAESoffice selects the first mach_cfg.txt file found as the source of the bitmap information.

  1. Resend the mach_cfg.txt file to the required machine.

Note: The machine configuration files are located in c:\caterpillar\caes\METSdata.

CAESultra - General

$ Material Parameter Index key

This key maps the order parameters are listed in CAES to the order listed when reported in the Load and Dippers sent to MineStar.

The following example reverses the order in which the parameters are reproduced for the Load and Dippers Report.

$ Material Max Parameters =4

$ Material Parameter Index 0 =3

$ Material Parameter Index 1 =2

$ Material Parameter Index 2 =1

$ Material Parameter Index 3 =0

ReferenceFor additional information, refer to Systems Operation, KENR6338, "CAES (v3.2)", "Material Parameter Configuration".

$ Activity Category Map key

Users must configure any instances of the $ Activity Category Map key that is used for coverage mapping as follows: use "coverage with time" instead of "coverage without time". To perform this change, edit the "file type" to a value of "13" as shown in bold below. This value is the third parameter that follows the = ""sign.

$ Activity Category Map 0 =19 0 13 2 2 1.0 10 CoverSVs.cat

$ Current Message Log File key

The "message logfile interval" string sets up an interval at which the specified file is sent to MineStar from the following key:

$ Current Message Log File =<filename>

<filename> - Enter the path and filename

$ Site Elevation Extents key

The $ Site Elevation Extents key can be added to the master configuration file. The key defines the maximum and minimum extent of elevations found on the site.

Note: The values set in the master configuration file need to correspond to the values that are set in METSmanager.

Configuring the Inclination Sensors

By default, the Excavator and Dual Receiver Front Shovel are now configured with the $ Use AS7 Sensors key. This key is configured in the machine configuration file. Installers are no longer required to manually configure the key when completing a new installation on either of these machines.

File Transfer over TMAC/UDP

FTP is the default protocol that is used by CAESultra to transfer files. To configure CAESultra to use reliable file transfer over TMAC, specific keys should be added or edited and configured as shown below:

  • $ Office Comms Protocol =UDP

  • $ Office Base Directory =C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\METSManagerData\METSdata\

Note: If users wish to switch between FTP and UDP, empty the communications queue of any files needing to transfer before the transfer protocol is changed. Users will need to reinstall METSmanager.

The header of the "File Transfer Diagnostics" screen indicates whether a system is configured as UDP or as FTP.

All CAESultra machines are able to send and receive multicast snippets. regardless of whether the $ Office Comms Protocol key is set to "FTP" or to "UDP".

Priority of Sending Files Within CAESultra

The sending of files has been prioritized so that files are sent according to the priority of the file type.

Beginning with the File Status as the most important, the priority is as follows: File Status, Productivity, Diagnostics and Snippets

Diagnostics Report - File Transfer Diagnostics Section

The File transfer diagnostics section is now appended to the end of the diagnostics report. This is a new position for this section.

File Transfer Diagnostics

The diagnostic file indicates the protocol that is active on the machine. The file transfer statistics for the protocol are also shown. Table 28 lists some typical values for this file.

CAN Diagnostic Dialog

In CAESultra there is a new CAN Diagnostic window. To access the window, select Diagnostics / CAN.

Use the window to view and decode CAN messages from different sources and CAN messages that are sent from CAESultra.

The main view continuously updates with the latest CAN message.

Incoming CAN Messages - The tab displays raw CAN messages from all sensors connected to the CAES harness.

Outgoing CAN Messages - The tab displays raw CAN messages sent to devices connected to the CAES harness.

Sensors - The tab displays the sensor type, the angle that is being measured, and the raw data from the sensor.

Bucket Load Incorrectly Identified

CAESultra would incorrectly identify material from an underlying hidden design. Material is now correctly identified.

Machine State and GPS State

CAESultra records the GPS state and the machine state as follows:

  • When the machine state is "Off", there is no GPS state.

  • When the GPS state is "Old", the machine state is "Uncertain".

  • When GPS is not connected, the GPS state is "no GPS".

  • When the GPS state is "no GPS", the machine state is "Uncertain".

Faster Screen Redraw

There has been a change in how CAESultra searches for lost snippet files, resulting in CAESultra redrawing faster while the snippet transfer list is built. Operators may experience a slight delay at start-up due to the buffering of positions. Once positions can be displayed, the positions quickly appear.

Point Text

Point text has now been improved so that the text can be seen anywhere on the site from the closest on screen position.

Adding a Digital Window

When a black background is selected in a digital window, the text and axis are drawn in white. For other selected background colors, the text and axis are drawn in black. A black text and axis can be difficult to see against a dark background such as dark blue.

Machine menu

The "Log GPS data" option has been removed from the "Machine" menu.

Changes to the CAESultra v3.2 keys

The following keys have been removed or are obsolete in CAESultra v3.2.3:

$ Front Shovel Avg Bench Height

$ Front Shovel Angle of Repose

$ Truckload Id

$ Log Loads

$ Use Mined Material In Load

$ Productivity File Name

Material Identification Choices Expanded

There are five types of color used in the CAESultra display for material identification. Hatched color and bitmap are new for v3.2.3.

  • DXF color

  • Mined-out polygons

  • Extended material identities

  • Hatched color

  • Bitmaps

Extended Material Identities are text strings contained within material polygons in a DXF file. Other than Extended Material Identities, all are types are configured in the mach_cfg.txt file.

Hatched Color

The D3:C4 Nav 10.4 Display has material colors with a wide hatched pattern over the fill color. This method is used to differentiate two sub types of the same material such as Hi Grade Ore and Low Grade Ore.

Illustration 63g02403277

Configuring hatched color on all new or existing machines

(1) Low Grade Ore

(2) High Grade Ore

Illustration 63 demonstrates hatched color used to differentiate one material (Ore) that has two sub types. High Grade Ore (1) is defined by the red area that is not hatched. Low Grade Ore (2) is defined by the red hatched polygon.

Note: The material identification hatch pattern is less dense than the Mining in Progress hatch pattern.

DXF Bitmaps

Bitmap images are used to overlay material colors and give additional information about the material. Bitmap images must be in *.bmp file format.

Custom 5 KB bitmap: HiGrade.

Illustration 64g02404317

In Illustration 64, the custom 5 KB bitmap, HiGrade.bmp, was placed in the caes\data directory onboard. The DXF color number 1, red, was described as Hi Grade. The key$ DXF Bitmap 1 =HiGrade.bmp was added to the machine configuration file.

On the machine, the bitmap appears and the loaded dipper shows the underlying material as red. The digital window (bottom right) also shows the material color as red.

Illustration 65g02404336

Illustrations 64 and 65 represent two different scales. Note however that the bitmap remains the same regardless of the scale that is displayed.

The following comments apply to bitmaps:

  • The bitmap is solid rather than transparent and replaces the color of the material (DXF color) in the plan window.

  • The color of the material, not the bitmap, appears in the bucket and in digital windows.

  • The Mined Out and Mining In Progress state is shown on top of the bitmap.

  • Bitmaps do not interact with Auto Ore Status Maintenance.

Original Ground On Machine

When a volume record was written or an office update was requested, CAESultra updated the entire original ground from the office data. The office did not necessarily contain the most recent information about the original ground in some cells. The result was that the machine was being updated with old information.

In v3.2.3, only the new or empty cells on the machine are updated from the office. Therefore, the as-built surface on the machine is almost always the most recent surface.

Excessive Snippets in File Transfer Queues

When large numbers of snippet files build up without being sent, CAESultra can take a long time to clear. This situation could occur when the network is down.

CAESultra now automatically checks the length of the file transfer queue. When the queue contains 50 snippet files, CAESultra merges files with the same type and group number. The old files are deleted and the new merged file is placed back in the queue. The process is logged in CAESultra Diagnostic File and the files appear in the Snippets diagnostic window

The same process occurs for UDP protocol for transmitting data (file transfer over TMAC) and FTP.

File Status to Office Not Correct

When using File Activation containing a command for a feature that is no longer supported, CAESultra v3.2.2 reported an error to the office. An example was when the activation file commanded CAESultra to set a non-timed current elevation file as prime.

File status on machine and in the office now synchronizes correctly.

File Activation Issue - Resolved

When using File Activation to read the data.txt activation file, only the first two lines in the file were read.

File Activation now reads all lines in the data.txt file.

Multiple Repaint Messages Issue - Resolved

When multicasting, multiple per second repaint messages were written to the Diagnostic Message Log file (DiagMsgLog).

CAESultra no longer writes repaint messages.

Max Number of Diagnostic Files - Altered

When CAESultra was used without an office product, *.diag files built up in CAESultra temp directory. This buildup occurred even when $ Max Num Of Diag Files was set.

The $ Max Num Of Diag Files now limits the number of automatically created Diagnostic Message Log files stored in the CAESultra temp directory.

Troubleshooting - Older DLL Files

If multiple DLL translation files are available, use the most up-to-date file. Older files may not show the light bar menu option in CAESultra.

Troubleshooting - Minimize Light from Screen

To minimize the amount of light coming from the screen, perform the following procedure:

Intensity Toolbar Icon

  1. In CAESultra, adjust the screen brightness.

    1. Open a fixed toolbar.

    1. Double-click the gray area around the toolbar to open the "Customize Toolbar" dialog.

    1. Add the "Intensity" toolbar icon.

    1. Use this icon to open the "Intensity Control" dialog.

    1. Set the sliding scale to "Dimmer".

  1. Open the mach_cfg.txt file and configure $ LED Brightness =65535 (fully dimmed).

The small green LED on the side of the screen is permanently dimmed.

CAESultra - Light Bar

The primary method of providing the operator with guidance information is to use the operator display that is inside the cab.

Illustration 66g02403296

Orientation of light bar installed vertically on right-hand side of operator display

A secondary method of providing guidance is to use an optional light bar. The light bar contains 12 amber LEDs (3) and three green LEDs (4) that provide a visual indication to the operator. The light bar can be installed vertically or horizontally.

For grade applications, the light bar is installed vertically as shown in Illustration 66. As the blade moves further above the zero point of the design, LEDs on the top half of the light bar turn on. As the blade moves further below the zero point of the design, LEDs on the bottom half of the light bar turn on. The number of LEDs turned on provides a visual indication of the distance the blade is off from the design.

Configuring the Light Bar

The following keys are available:

  • $ Lightbar Address

  • $ Lightbar Range

  • $ Lightbar Intensity

  • $ Ligthbar Inverted

  • $ Lightbar Disabled

All five keys are initially configured by the installer in the mach_cfg.txt file on the machine. Once configured, the operator can turn the light bar on or off, alter brightness, set to inverted if required, and the set the range. When CAESultra is stopped and started again, the operator settings are remembered.

Note: For all keys <number> = instance of the key. This value must be unique and consecutive. Version 3.2.3 supports the use of one light bar, so <number> = 0

Defining the Point of Reference

CAESultra recognizes the machine type and calculates the distance from a point of reference. The light bar uses the following location on the machine as the point of reference:

Dozer - Center of blade on ground

Scraper - Center of blade

Loader - Wheel radius, right side front wheel

Grader - Center of blade

Front Shovel (single antenna - Center of right side track

Excavator (dual antenna) - Center of bucket tip

Compactor - Center of front axle on ground

Reading the Light Bar

Note: The light bar in CAES is not linked to on grade tolerance.

The number of LEDs turned on provides a visual indication of the distance between the point of reference and the design. To provide an idea of on grade tolerance, set $ Lightbar Range at approximately seven times the on grade tolerance value.

Example

The on grade tolerance of the design is 3 inches. Set $ Lightbar Range at 20 inches. The LEDs from the center of the light bar to the top of the light bar represent 20 inches on the design. If four LEDs are on (two green and two red), the machine is about 10 inches above the zero point of the design. If two LEDs are on (two green), the machine is about 3 inches above the design.

The LED configurations below have the following meanings:

All LEDs on - Not over the prime design

Single LED at the top - Above the light bar range

Single LED at the bottom - Below the light bar range

Two LEDs at top and two at bottom - Guidance is not provided

Guidance is not provided under the following GPS status conditions: "No GPS", "Old GPS" and any status other than "High".

Setting up the Light Bar

Perform the following procedure to set up the light bar in CAESultra to enable the operator to customize the light bar as needed:

  1. Enter light bar keys into the mach_cfg.txt file in the office.

  1. Send the file to the machine.

  1. Restart CAESultra.

  1. Use the Screen Configuration Utility to set up a toolbar button to open the "Lightbar Settings" dialog.

Light Bar Toolbar Button

Configuring the "Ligthbar Settings" Dialog

Illustration 67g02404278

Select Menu > Systems > Light Bar to open the Light Bar Settings dialog. The following settings can be configured:

"Lightbar Enabled" - The operator can turn the light bar off and on

"Brightness" - The initial intensity of the LEDs is configured in the mach_cfg.txt file, but the brightness is then altered by the operator as needed.

"Inverted" - If the light bar is mounted with the long side to the top or to the right, then "Inverted" setting must be selected.

"Range" - The range of the light bar is initially configured in the mach_cfg.txt file, but altered by the operator as needed.

Light Bar Memory

The operator settings are retained when CAESultra is stopped and then started.

The operator settings are retained when a new mach_cfg.txt file is sent to the machine. The machine and the mach_cfg.txt file in the office may contain different values. Update the light bar fields in the mach_cfg.txt file in the office regularly to ensure that the office has a copy of the onboard settings.

No Light Bar Configured

When the "Lightbar Settings" dialog is selected and the light bar is connected but not configured, the following error message appears:

"No Lightbar Configured"

  1. Select "OK".

  1. Configure the light bar keys in the mach_cfg.txt file.

Light Bar Serial Port

Select either Port 1 or Port 3 for the light bar.

If using MMS and a radio that uses a serial port, there is no spare serial port and a light bar cannot be used.

Installation Field Notes

To run both MMS and a light bar. fabricate an extension harness to connect the light bar to port 3.

ReferenceFor instruction in fabricating an extension harness, refer to Special Instruction, REHS4691, "Installation of the Light Bar for CAESultra" in the "Light Bar Serial Port Acess" section.

Choose a location on the machine to ensure that the operator can easily see the light bar. For example, in grade control the light bar is installed vertically that the operator can see both the light bar and the blade.

After the mach_cfg.txt is configured, alter the light bar settings through the CAESultra display.

ReferenceFor instruction in installing the light bar, refer to Special Instruction, REHS4691, "Installation of the Light Bar for CAESultra" in the "Light Bar Serial Port Acess" section.

CAESoffice

Build up of Temporary Files

When a CAT surface for display is dragged and dropped in a CAESoffice window, a temporary file named "cat<#>" is created. This temporary file is never cleared from the directory. These files can be large (5+ MBs). Cleanup is required over time to free up memory on the office PC that is running CAESoffice.

The files are located in the system-configured folder named TEMP/TMP.

To find the folder TEMP/TMP, perform one of the following:

  • Open a command window (cmd.exe) and type "echo %TMP%". The system indicates the location of the folder.

  • Right-click My Computer and select Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables.

Incorrect Authentication Codes or Keys - Resolved

When asking for CAESoffice Authentication Codes and Authentication Keys, users sometimes received incorrect codes or keys. This situation was due to CAESoffice listing the serial number incorrectly. In turn, the user passed on an incorrect serial number when upgrading or installing CAESoffice.

The serial numbers are now listed correctly.

CAT Tools

CAES v3.1 Uploader, Database, and Report Generator

The v3.1 tools can be used in parallel with v3.2.3 to provide reports on existing v3.1 machines. The tools can also be used to provide a comparison of reporting abilities between the two versions.

The v3.2.3 productivity records cannot be used by the v3.1 reporting tools.

CAT Configurator

Once the Cat Productivity Reporting Tools are installed, create the following: crews, a roster, and a schedule must be created in the Cat Configurator before any data is loaded into the database. If these items are not created, Cat Reports will not produce reports that are populated with the required information. Problems may occur once the term of the roster and the schedule has completed. To avoid this effect, create a roster and a schedule that continues for 10 years.

CAT Editor - Supports Edits to Multiple Data Segments

CATeditor now can make edits to multiple segments of data (CATeditor 6.5.1.0 and onwards). Click on a segment of data, hold the "Ctrl" key, and click to select a separate segment. The value for all the segments between and including the two selected segments can now be edited.

The feature is limited to only allowing edits to be made to one timeline at a time.

  1. Select the first segment of data that to edit.

    Illustration 68g02405340

  1. Hold the "Ctrl" key and select the last segment to be edited.

The "Timeline Segment Multi-Editor" dialog appears. The dialog displays the start and end time and the duration of the selected segments. The "Segment Value" is a pull-down menu that contains a list from which another value can be selected.

  1. Press "OK" to accept the change or "Cancel" to close the dialog and discard the change.

If you select "OK", the section that has been edited will change color.

The following considerations are relevant to understanding how the multi-edit function works:

  • The first segment that is selected does not have to be the first segment chronologically.

  • The value that is presented in the "Segment Value" pull-down menu is the data value for the first segment that appears in chronological order.

  • Segments that have no data cannot be edited.

CAT Reports - Version Numbers

Report names now include version numbers. For example, if ChecklistReport.rpt is at version 01, the new name is ChecklistReport-01.rpt. The version is also shown in the report title and report footer.

CAT Reports - New Reports

CAT Tools has the following new reports:

AvoidanceTransgressions - Displays a daily list of machine transgressions into an avoidance surface or an avoidance zone for a specified time

DailyOfficeVolumeFromCurrentElevation - Displays the daily volume changes for a site

DailyOfficeVolumeFromDesign - Displays the daily volume changes for a site within a specified design

CAT Reports - Changes to Existing Reports

The following changes were made:

  • All reports, such as Material Design and TTT, that use design have been modified to use the snap shot table rather than the session_id table.

  • Filtered reports so that any design file that is not a Design Elevation file is filtered out. Reports will no longer show covertime.cat, curelevtime.cat, or origelevtime.cat design files.

  • Changed title on "Average Machine Velocity & Slope" graph to "Average Machine Velocity & Slope per Cycle/Hour"

  • Changed title on "Average Cycle Distances & Cycle Count" graph to "Average Cycle Distances & Cycle Count per Hour"

  • Changed title on "Cut & Negative Cut To Design Volumes" graph to "Cut & Cut To Design Volume per Cycle/Hour"

  • Changed label "Negative Cut to Design Volume" to" Cut to Design Volume"

  • Added TTT Cycles Per Hour Report to report footer.

The following reports are now split into two separate reports to eliminate duplicate data. For example, a machine could have both a design elevation and a design ore file set to primary on the machine.

  • BucketElevations:

BucketElevationsDesignElevation - Only shows data that was created on machine when a design elevation file was set to primary

BucketElevationsDesignOre - Only shows data that was created on machine when a design ore file was set to primary

  • GPSBucketSummary:

GPSBucketSummaryDesignElevation - Only shows data that was created on machine when a design elevation file was set to primary

GPSBucketSummaryDesignOre - Only shows data that was created on machine when a design ore file was set to primary

  • SwingAngles:

SwingAnglesDesignElevation - Only shows data that was created on machine when a design elevation file was set to primary.

SwingAnglesDeignOre - Only shows data that was created on machine when a design ore file was set to primary.

CAT Reports - Advanced Reports

When creating an advanced report, users are able to edit parameters for each report. For newly installed systems, the parameter fields are populated with default settings. Users can change these parameters. Any changes that are made will be saved to the following file: C:\Program Files\Caterpillar\CAT Reports\Adv_Report_Info.cfg

When upgrading CAES Office Suite, the installer will not overwrite this file. This precaution ensures that the changes made in the previous version of the CAT Reports tool are not lost. If users want to return to the default values, then delete this file before performing the upgrade.

Polygon Filter

The user may see a Polygon Filter drop-down box in the Advanced reports Selection dialog. In v3.2.3, this feature is not enabled and cannot be edited.

Database

Choice of Productivity Database

CAESultra v3.2.3 introduces the option of using one of the following databases:

  • Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (XE)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition database

Users can use either but not both databases to store site productivity information.

Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (XE)

The installation of the Oracle Database 10g Express Edition is described in a PDF document. The document is entitled "Installing Oracle Database 10g XE".

The option to view this document is provided during the installation process. Alternatively, the document can be found in the "Start" menu under "Programs/Caterpillar".

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

The installation of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is described in a PDF document. The document is entitled Installing "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition". The migration of data from Oracle to MS SQL database is described in "Migrating CAES Data from Oracle to MSSQL Instructions".

The option to view this document is provided during the installation process. Alternatively, the document can be found in the "Start" menu under "Programs/Caterpillar".

Load GPS State to Snapshot Table is Optional

To reduce upload time, the user can now disable the loading of GPS state into the snapshot table. This feature applies to both Oracle and MS SQL databases.

Entering weights for Density reports

To ensure valid data in the density reports, complete the following:

  1. Enter the weights in the local time zone of the site.

  1. Generate the reports on a PC that is set to the local time zone setting of the site.

The weights are stored in the database in the local time zone. The volumes are stored in the database in GMT. When the volumes are sent to the density reports, the volumes are shifted into the local time zone setting of the PC. This action successfully matches the weight and volume data in the local time zone setting of the site.

There are two methods for entering weights in the local time zone setting that must be followed.

CAT Editor - If using CAT Editor, enter weights on a PC that is set to the local time zone setting of the site

Productivity file - If using the productivity file, enter the weight dates in the local time zone of the site.

Note all dates must be entered in the form DD/MM/YYYY

File Builder

File Builder is still required with CAES v3.2.3 for creating the list data to be used within CAESultra.

New Documentation

New documentation is available in Start > All Programs > Caterpillar. The documentation includes the following:

  • CAES v3.2.3 Database Definition

  • Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

  • Migrating CAES data from Oracle to SQL Server

Known Issues

CAT Reports - Advanced Reports - Language

Currently, CAES Office Suite does not support language options for any advanced reports. CAT advanced reports can only be generated in English.

CAT Reports - Advanced Reports - Operating System

The advanced reports in CAT Reports are limited to Microsoft Windows 32-bit operating systems and are not supported on a 64-bit Microsoft Windows operating system.

CMOS Battery Failure

Users may experience associated problems with dates that begin on 1January 1999. This problem may appear in a number of different ways including the following:

  • Date and time reported in CAESultra

  • Times recorded in productivity files

Illustration 69g02405341

In CAESultra, the System Error message in Illustration 69 appears if the year on the display is set to earlier than 2008.

The CMOS battery in the D3:C4 Nav v10.4 display may be unable to supply the display with power when turned off. If the battery cannot supply power, then the display is unable to store the current time and date and defaults to 1January 1999.

Contact your Cat dealer to have the CMOS battery failure resolved.

Once the problem has been resolved, CAESultra will continue to give an error message until you perform the following procedure:

  1. Manually change the date on the display, or else have the GPS receiver provide a date.

  1. Power down the display for a few seconds and restart the display.
