This 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the Implement ECM and the Implement ECM 2. The communication is conducted on the Cat Data Link or the SAE J1939 (CAN) Data Link.
The FMI 14 diagnostic code means that the Implement ECM is not receiving expected operating parameter information from the Implement ECM 2. However, the Implement ECM and the Implement ECM 2 may be communicating intermittently.
The CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code is activated by the Implement ECM in association with a companion code. The "companion" diagnostic code is activated to indicate the specific data link involved in the communication error. The companion diagnostic code that has been activated will be either of the following diagnostic codes:
CID 0247 FMI 14 - SAE J1939 Data Link
CID 0248 FMI 14 - Cat Data Link
Determine the companion diagnostic code that was activated along with the CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code to indicate the appropriate data link.
Note: When the CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code is cleared, the companion diagnostic code for the data link will also clear.
Some conditions that can cause this diagnostic code are listed below:
- The software that is installed on the Implement Control 2 ECM is incorrect.
- The software that is installed on the "Implement ECM" is incorrect.
- A new ECM, with an incorrect part number, has been installed.
Note: Ensure that the CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.
Test Step 1. DETERMINE THE COMPANION DIAGNOSTIC CODE FOR THE DATA LINK THAT IS ACTIVE
Note: If the incorrect software or a faulty control module is the cause the problem, both of the companion diagnostic codes may be active.
- Check the list of active diagnostic codes in order to determine which of the following companion diagnostic codes is active:
CID 0247 FMI 14 - SAE J1939 Data Link
CID 0248 FMI 14 - Cat Data Link
Results:
- OK - The CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active indicating that the problem is in the Cat Data Link. In order to perform the troubleshooting procedure for the Cat Data Link, proceed to Test Step 2.
- OK - The CID 0247 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active indicating that the problem is in the SAE J1939 Data Link. In order to perform the troubleshooting procedure for the SAE J1939 Data Link, proceed to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS
- Verify that the following information is correct:
- The part number of the installed software of the Implement ECM
- The part number of the installed software of the Implement Control 2 ECM.
- The part number of the Implement ECM
- The part number of the Implement Control 2 ECM.
Note: Contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for the correct part numbers of the hardware and the correct part numbers for the configuration software.
- The part number of the installed software of the Implement ECM
Expected Result:
All hardware and software part numbers are correct.
Results:
- OK - All hardware and software part numbers are correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - All hardware and software part numbers are NOT correct.
Repair: Replace the hardware or software that is incorrect with the correct version. For flashing software, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program". For replacing ECM modules, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace"
STOP
Test Step 3. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
- Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
- Operate the machine.
- Check the status of the CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code.
Expected Result:
The CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active.
Results:
- OK - The CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code could have been caused by a problem during start-up with one of the controls for the ECM. Resume normal operation.STOP
- NOT OK - The CID 1558 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.
Repair: A failure of the Implement ECM is unlikely. Verify that all possible causes of the diagnostic code have been investigated. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the diagnostic code remains active or if the diagnostic code is repeatedly activated and no cause can be found, flash the ECM with the latest version of software. Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program" section of this manual for the correct procedure. If the problem is still present after flashing the latest software to your ECM, contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership in order to consult with the Caterpillar Dealer Solutions Network.
