Instructions for Fabricating a Plate Assembly on Certain 140M and 160M Motor Graders {1051, 1054}

Usage:

140M B9D
Motor Grader:
140M (S/N: B9D1-UP; B9G1-UP; D9G1-UP; B9M1-UP)
160M (S/N: B9E1-UP; B9L1-UP; B9T1-UP; D9T1-UP)

The new plate assembly is used to reduce air filter clogging that is caused by snow on 140M and 160M Motor Graders.

Utilize the following procedure to fabricate a cover to replace the 246-4611 Air Cleaner Cap As temporarily.

Note: This dealer fabricated plate assembly must be removed and the original air cleaner cap assembly must be reinstalled when ambient temperatures consistently remain above approximately 10° C (50° F) or after the possibility of light, powdery snow does not exist.

    (2) 219-0314 Clamp

    (3) 250-2984 Extension Pipe

  1. Remove cap assembly (1) by loosening clamp (2) and removing extension pipe (3) .

  1. Retain these parts for future use when ambient temperatures are consistently above 10° C (50° F).

    (B) 330 mm (12.992 inch)

    (C) Thickness of 3 mm (0.118 inch)

  1. Fabricate a plate with a thickness of measurement (C) and a length and width of measurements (A) and (B) .

  1. Round the corners of the plate assembly.

    (E) 95 mm (3.740 inch)

    (F) 60 mm (2.362 inch)

    (G) 31 mm (1.220 inch)

    (H) 29 mm (1.142 inch)

  1. Drill four 13.5 mm (0.532 inch) diameter holes in the plate using the dimensions in Illustration 3.

Installing the Plate Assembly

    (1) Locations for securing the plate assembly

    (2) Plate

    (3) Existing bolts

  1. Install plate (2) over the opening for the air cleaner cap assembly that was removed.

  1. Secure the plate with the existing bolts (3) .

  1. With the plate secured, drill the holes in locations (1) for the additional bolts needed to secure the plate assembly.

  1. Once the holes are drilled, remove the plate assembly and fabricate a gasket in the shape of the plate assembly. The gasket should be made of rubber sheet stock (chloroprene) or an equivalent, with a durometer harness rating 40.

  1. Reinstall the gasket and plate assembly using two 8T-4136 Bolts, two 8T-4133 Nuts, and two 8T-4121 Hard Washers to secure the plate at locations (1) .
