730E Ejector Tailgate Pivot Modification{7271} Caterpillar

730E Ejector Tailgate Pivot Modification{7271}

Usage:

730 B1W
Articulated Truck:
730 EJECTOR (S/N: B1W1-424)

Introduction

The intention of this procedure is to prevent bending of the tailgate cylinder pivot linkage. The upper pivot pin has been extended and a support plate has been added.

ReferenceRefer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9564-03, "730 Ejector Articulated Truck Machine Systems " for additional information.

Warning

Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1841, "General Welding Procedures" before any work is performed.

------ WARNING! ------

When it is necessary to work under the machine with the body (bed) raised, attach the body (bed) retaining cables to the rear tow points. Install the rear tow point pins through the ends of the retaining cables.

Failure to properly secure the body (bed) may result in personal injury or death.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from working with cleaning solvent.

Because of the volatile nature of many cleaning solvents, extreme caution must be exercised when using them. If unsure about a particular cleaning fluid, refer to the manufacturer's instructions and directions.

Always wear protective clothing and eye protection when working with cleaning solvents.

----------------------

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

General Notes

Illustration 1g02173444

Install the tailgate retaining pins before any work is done. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual.

Illustration 2g02156142

The illustration above shows the support plate fully welded to the body plates.

Note: Do not weld at the joint between the top and rear body plates. Shape the support plate to allow full welding around the plate, but with no weld at the joint between the body plates.

Installation Procedure

    Illustration 3g02173452

  1. Remove the rubber cover (A) and the retaining strip (B) that protects the tailgate cylinder. Retain for use at reassembly.

    Illustration 4g02189773

  1. Use suitable cutting equipment in order to remove bracket assembly (C) from the ejector body. Then remove the tailgate cylinder pivot linkage (D) to allow access the pivot pin boss on the ejector body.

    Illustration 5g02173454

  1. Accurately mark the location of the existing boss on the body frame rail. Carefully cut the boss from the side of the body frame rail. Using the location marks, position and clamp a new 285-8895 Boss (1) onto the frame rail. Weld the boss to the rail using a continuous 8 mm (0.4 inch) fillet weld completely around the boss.

  1. Clean off all weld spatter and repair paint as required. Do not allow paint to come into contact with the inner bore of the boss.

    Illustration 7g02173476

  1. Install a new 422-7783 Pin (2) .

    Illustration 8g02156176

  1. Install tailgate pivot linkages onto new pin, then position 362-6727 Plate (3) onto pin (2) .

Note: The plate may require some trimming to suit the ejector body.

    Illustration 9g02156193

  1. Check the clearance between the inside face of the support plate (3) and the tailgate pivot linkage (4). With the tailgate pivot linkages pushed fully against the 285-8895 Boss (1), provide 2 mm (0.08 inch) to 3 mm (0.12 inch) of clearance.

    Illustration 10g02156194

  1. Weld the support plate (3) to the body using fillet welds along the top and rear edges of the support plate. Weld on both sides of the plate.

Note: Illustration 10 in this procedure shows the support plate fully welded to the body plates. Do not weld at the joint between the top and rear body plates. Shape the support plate to allow full welding around the plate, but with no weld at the joint between the body plates.

    Illustration 11g02173453

  1. Install a new bracket assembly (C) for the protective cover for the tailgate cylinder. Position the bracket so that when the cover is installed the cover will not contact the tire or the pivot linkage. Weld the bracket to the body in four places using 5 mm (0.2 inch) fillet welds.

  1. Install the linkage for the cylinder (D). Use a 7X-2578 Bolt (5) a 8T-4167 Hard Washer (6) .

  1. Check operation of tailgate.

  1. Remove weld spatter and repaint as required.

  1. Reinstall the rubber cover.

  1. Repeat procedure for the other side of the machine
