This Special Instruction provides the information needed for installing the 342-2683 Machine Enclosure Seal Kit (DEBRIS BARRIER) on the machines above. The kit contains seals, covers, and brushes designed to cover the openings that exist between the frame and the body of the machines. These components prevent wood chips and other materials from entering the engine compartment and the lower frame.

Caterpillar requires the use of the 312-1024 Engine Enclosure Kit and the 272-3062 Debris Guard Kit with the 342-2683 Machine Enclosure Seal Kit (DEBRIS BARRIER) for proper function of the machine systems. Refer to Table 1 for the proper debris guard kit.

The cover assemblies that are provided in this kit are fabricated from a material that is polyester. The polyester is coated with vinyl. The cover assemblies utilize hook and loop fasteners. Double-sided tape attaches the hook and loop fasteners to the machine. After the adhesive on the tape has cured, you can remove the cover assemblies and you can reinstall the cover assemblies, as needed.

Note: Some of the components in this kit utilize adhesive strips and adhesive backing as the means for attaching the component. The mounting surface for these components should be clean and free of grease to ensure proper adhesion. Use a cleaning solvent or a standard degreaser in order to remove grease and oil from the surface. Then, wipe the mounting surface with alcohol and allow the surface to dry completely before applying the adhesive.

Note: The adhesive in this kit will take 24 hours in order to cure. Once the adhesive is correctly placed on the mounting surface, the adhesive must not be disturbed for 24 hours.

Do not perform any procedure outlined in this publication until you read the information and understand the information contained in this document.
