Bogie Oil - Change

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


The oil level plugs and the oil drain plugs are located on the inside of each bogie.

  1. Operate the machine for a few minutes in order to warm the oil in the bogies. Park the machine on level ground and engage the parking brake.

    Allow the machine to remain stationary for 30 minutes. This will allow any contaminants in the oil to settle.

  1. Perform an S·O·S test immediately after warming up the oil in the bogie.

    ReferenceRefer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Bogie Oil Sample - Obtain" in order to properly extract an oil sample from the bogies.

  1. Clean the area around drain plugs (2), (3), and (6) and around filler plugs (1) and (4) .

  1. Remove drain plug (2) and allow the oil to drain into a clean container and a suitable container.

    Note: The oil may be reused after an inspection if the oil is clean.

  1. When the oil has drained, install drain plug (2). Do not dispose of the oil at this time.

  1. Perform an S·O·S test from the oil that has drained from drain plug (2). This test will show that the oil is clean and that the oil may be reused.

    Note: When you are filling the bogie with the used oil that was drained in step 4, be certain that the oil is clean.

  1. Open drain plug (3). Drain the oil into a suitable container. This oil must be disposed of.

  1. When the oil has drained completely, install drain plug (3) .

  1. Drain plug (3) is a magnetic plug. Remove any material from the magnetic drain plug. Clean drain plug (3) and install drain plug (3) .

  1. Remove drain plug (6) and allow the oil to drain into a suitable container. Properly dispose of this oil.

  1. When the oil has drained, install drain plug (6) .

  1. Remove filler plugs (1) and (4) and fill the bogie with oil.

    Note: If the oil sample that was taken in step 2 shows that the oil may be reused, you may fill the bogie with the used oil first. After you fill the bogie with the oil that was previously drained from the bogie in step 10, you may now fill the bogie to full capacity with new oil.

    ReferenceRefer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the bogies.

  1. Check the oil level in the bogie. The oil level should be at the bottom of the opening for the oil level check plugs (1) and (5). Clean the oil level check plugs (1) and (5). Install plug (1) and plug (5) .

  1. Operate the machine for a few minutes. Check the oil level again. Add oil, if necessary.
