Governor (3161)

Usage:

Remove Governor (3161)

1. Remove two bolts (2), and loosen two bolts (3) that hold bracket (1) to the governor.

2. Disconnect hose assembly (4) from the smoke limiter.

3. Remove bolts (6) that fasten cover (5) to the accessory drive housing. The upper left hand corner bolt (X) is loosened but cannot be removed.

4. Remove bolts (8) that fasten governor (7) to the drive housing. Carefully remove governor (7) from the drive housing. The weight of the governor is 18 kg (40 lb.).

NOTICE

To prevent possible damage, do not set the governor on the drive shaft or the terminal shaft.

5. Remove bolt (9) and control lever (10) from the governor terminal shaft. Remove cover (5) from the governor terminal shaft.

6. Remove the lip-type seal and washer (11) from cover (5).

Install Governor (3161)

NOTE: The 3161 Governor is available as a direct replacement for the UG-8 Governor. The correct governor drive adapter housing must be used in either application. The 3161 Governor must use an adapter housing which has drilled passages for engine oil lubrication. The 3161 Governor Drive Adapter Housing uses four O-ring seals.

1. Install washer (2), and use tool (A) to install seal (1) in cover (3). The lip of the seal is installed toward the governor. Put clean engine oil on the seal surface.

2. Bolt (4) must be in position before cover (3) is installed on the output shaft. Install cover (3) on the output shaft.

3. Install control lever (5) on the output shaft.

4. Install four new O-ring seals in adapter housing (8). O-ring seals (9) and (10) are for the oil pressure port and the oil drain port respectively. The other two ports are used when the governor is installed on the left hand side of the engine.

5. Put gasket (6) in position on the accessory drive housing. Use grease to hold it in position.

6. Install O-ring seal (12) on the governor. Put governor (11) in position in the governor drive housing. Be sure the governor drive shaft and the spline drive in the governor drive housing are in alignment.

7. Use the following steps for the governor installation alignment procedures.

a. Make an alignment of the pin in control lever (5) with the slot in the fuel control linkage stop lever (7). See Illustration B86232P1 and B85011P2.

b. Position the base of the governor so side (X) of the base is parallel with surface (Y) of governor drive housing (20). Tighten governor mounting bolts (18).

c. Now, loosen governor drive housing bolts (21).

d. Move the governor and drive housing as needed until the holes in cover (3) are in alignment with the holes in accessory drive housing (19). Install, but do not tighten, the seven cover bolts (17).

e. Tighten the six drive housing bolts (21).

f. Now, tighten the seven cover bolts (17).

g. After all bolts are tightened, check to be sure governor terminal shaft rotates freely.

NOTE: Spring pressure in the Caterpillar 3161 Governor should cause the output terminal shaft to go back to the fuel-off position when released from the full-fuel position.

h. If output terminal shaft (15) does not turn freely, do Steps c through g again.

i. Put bracket (16) in position with the open slots over bolts (14). Install washers and bolts (13) that hold bracket (16) to cover (3), but do not tighten these bolts.

j. Tighten bolts (14) that hold the bracket to the governor first; then tighten bolts (13) that hold bracket (16) to cover (3).

8. Connect hose assembly (22) to the smoke limiter.

9. It is necessary to prime the governor before the engine is started. Remove the oil fill plug from the governor top cover. Add 1.8 liter (2 qt.) of clean engine oil to the governor. Install the fill plug in the governor top cover.

10. For governor adjustment, see 3161 Governor Service Manual, Form No. SENR3028.
