Several reports have been received from the field of the 102-2828 Oil Filter (Hydraulic) (1) loosening. The hydraulic oil filter is part of the 177-6979 Oil Filter Gp (Hydraulic Fan) (Steering). The two filters are mounted on the steering tank (2) that is on the right hand platform. When the two filters loosen, the potential exists for a hydraulic oil leak.
Solution
Check that the two 102-2828 Oil Filters (Hydraulic) (1) have not loosened. If you find that one or both of the hydraulic oil filters has become loose, do not tighten the filter(s). This could overtighten the filter(s). Completely remove the filter(s) and install the new filter(s). Mark a line on the filter and the filter base. Use the line as a visual aid in order to determine if the filter has loosened in the future (daily walk-around inspections). If the filter is coming loose, remove the entire filter assembly and return to Caterpillar as is. Note the filter assembly that is used (example: upper or lower), the serial number for the truck, and the number of hours on the filter. See the ""Return Address for the Filter" " section for returns. Do not attempt to tighten the filter after the filter has come loose. Do not remove the filter from the base. Replace the filter assembly with a new filter assembly. Mark the new filter assembly by using the same procedure that was used on the previous filter assembly. Continue monitoring on a daily basis. Follow the instructions that are in Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7792, "793D Off-Highway Truck", "Oil Filter (Steering, Hydraulic Fan) - Replace - Hydraulic Pump Case Drain".
