Differential and Bevel Gear (Locking) - Remove

Start By:
- Remove the axle housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Housing (Short) - Remove".
- Remove the front trunnion support if you are working on the rear axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Trunnion Support (Oscillating Axle, Front) - Remove and Install".
- Remove two bolts (1) that are spaced 180 degrees. Install Tooling (A). Remove remaining bolts (1). Do NOT remove three bolts (2) .

- Separate the final drive and wheel (3) from the axle housing and slide the final drive and wheel (3) onto Tooling (A). Attach a suitable lifting device, Tooling (B), and Tooling (C) to the final drive and wheel (3). The weight of the final drive and wheel (2) is approximately 197 kg (435 lb).
- Remove axle shaft (5) and hub (4). Remove Tooling (A) .

- Use a suitable lifting device in order to position the axle housing onto Tooling (D), as shown. The weight of the axle housing is approximately 408 kg (900 lb).

- Attach a suitable lifting device to pinion housing (6). The weight of pinion housing (6) is approximately 23 kg (50 lb). Remove bolts (7). Use two bolts (7) as forcing screws in order to separate pinion housing (6) from the axle housing. Remove any shims that are present.

- Attach Tooling (E) and a suitable lifting device to intermediate housing (10). The weight of intermediate housing (10) is approximately 34 kg (75 lb). Remove allen head bolts (9) and bolts (8). Use Tooling (F) in order to separate intermediate housing (10) from the differential assembly.

- Remove shims (11) .

- Attach Tooling (E) and a suitable lifting device to differential and bevel gear group (12). The weight of differential and bevel gear group (12) is approximately 98 kg (215 lb).

- Remove thrust race (15), thrust bearing (14), and thrust race (13) .

- Remove bolts (16). Use Tooling (G) in order to separate the differential piston and bearing assembly (17) from the axle housing.

- Use Tooling (H) and a suitable press in order to remove bearing (19) from piston (18) .

- Remove piston (18) from piston housing (20) .
- Remove D-ring seals (21) and (22) from piston (18) .

- Remove two small O-ring seals (23) that are located in the axle housing.
