The machine is equipped with two steering wheels (1) and (2). The steering wheels are independently controlled.
Steering wheels (1) and (2) control the position of the front tracks.

(3) Rear steering switch (4) Steering mode switch |
The machine is equipped with two rear steering switches (3) (right shown). One rear steering switch is located on each side of the instrument panel. The machine is equipped with single steering mode switch (4) .
Rear steering switches (3) (right shown) are toggle switches with three positions. The switches are spring returned to the center position. During normal operation, the rear steering switches are enabled when steering mode switch (4) is in the REAR position. When the machine is being towed with a dead engine, the rear steering switch (on the right side of the instrument panel) and the tow switch control the accessory motor. This motor provides hydraulic power in order to steer the rear tracks.
Note: For additional information about the supplemental rear steering system, refer to the auxiliary hydraulic system in this module.
When both of rear steering switches (3) (right shown) are in the center position, the rear tracks hold position. When either switch is moved to the right, the rear tracks turn clockwise. When either switch is moved to the left, the rear tracks turn counterclockwise.
Steering mode switch (4) is a rotary type switch with four positions. The left most position of the steering mode switch is the REAR position. The next position of the switch is the CRAB position. The third switch position is the COORDINATED position. The right most position of the switch is the FRONT position. The machine ECM reads the position of the switch. The machine ECM determines the means that is needed to control the machine steering. If the steering mode selector switch is not in the REAR position when the engine is started, the machine ECM generates a fault. The operator must then set the switch to the REAR position to remove the fault and reset the steering.
When the steering mode switch is in the REAR position, steering wheels (1) and (2) control the turn direction of the front tracks, and rear steering switch (3) controls the turn direction of the rear tracks. When the steering mode switch is in the CRAB position or in the COORDINATED position, the machine ECM causes the rear tracks to turn with the front tracks.
In "CRAB" mode, the front tracks and the rear tracks turn in the same direction. This action allows the machine to travel sideways. In the "COORDINATED" mode, the front tracks and the rear tracks turn in opposite directions. Therefore, the rear of the machine follows the front of the machine through the turn. In the "FRONT" steering mode, the steering wheel controls the front tracks, and the machine ECM causes the rear tracks to remain in a straight travel position.
