( 1 ) Replacement part

The torque is preset at the factory. The torque limiter does not require adjustment at the time of installation.

Note: The torque limiter can be allowed to wear until the wear indicator protrudes beyond the milled flat surface of the pressure plate. The wear indicator should be checked periodically.

Note: The RM-250C only has two friction plates versus three on the other machines.

Disassembly

    (A) The spring cup (A).

Note: Do not disassemble the spring cups (A) .

Note: If a spring cup is damaged, dispose of the spring cup in a safe manner.

Note: Do not apply heat to the output hub.

Note: Do not loosen or remove torque pins from the end plate.

  1. The following procedure assumes that the torque limiter has been removed from the machine.

  1. Place the torque limiter on a work bench. The input bearing should be facing upward.

Inspection

  1. Check the flatness of the pressure plate and input hub with a straight edge and feeler gauge. If warpage exceeds 0.13 mm (0.005 inch), then replace the pressure plate.

  1. Check the spring cups. If any of the bolts are damaged or even suspected of being damaged, then replace bolts.

  1. Check the face of bearing (15) .

Maintenance on the Friction Surfaces

  1. Use an emery cloth with 300 grit to remove any corrosion from the following parts:

    • Input hub

    • Pressure plate

    • Separator plate

  1. Use an emery cloth with 300 to lightly sand the following parts:

    • Friction material on the fixed friction plate

    • The two friction plates

  1. Use an emery cloth with 300 grit to lightly polish the ID of the bronze bearing and the OD of the mating surface of the input hub.

  1. Use 222-3117 Brake Cleaner to clean the friction surfaces of the input hub, pressure plate, separator plates, bearing, and input hub. Then dry with a clean rag. Do not leave any residue on the friction surfaces.

Note: DO NOT USE BRAKE CLEANER ON FRICTION MATERIAL.

Assembly

  1. Install bearing into the output hub. If the bearing is worn or damaged replace the bearing.

  1. Place pressure plate (6) on a work bench with the friction surface upward.

  1. Lower the output hub into the pressure plate. The friction plate must be facing upward.

  1. Install friction plate (9) on top of the separator plate. The holes in the separator plate should be engaged in the dowel pins.

    Illustration 20g01263486

  1. Lower the input hub onto the friction plate. Torque pins (16) should pass through the two smaller holes with separator plate (7) .

  1. Turn over the torque limiter. The face of the drive shaft should be facing upward.

    Illustration 21g01263497

  1. Install spring cups onto input hub (17). Hex of the spring cups must be piloted in hex holes in the pressure plate. Refer to "" Location and Torque of Spring Cups" " for the correct location and proper torque of the spring cups.

    Illustration 22g01262967

  1. Install locknuts (4) which hold spring cups (5) .

  1. Secure the spring cups with locknuts. Do not exceed 68 N·m (50 lb ft) of torque.

    Illustration 23g01191681

  1. Replace shield (3). Use fasteners (1) and (2) .

    Illustration 24g01263501

    Illustration 25g01263509

  1. Paint a line (18) on the torque limiting coupling in order to verify that the torque limiter slips when high impact load is encountered. The painted line (18) will separate indicating that a high impact load has been encountered. If the line does not separate, remove the torque limiter and perform the procedure above.

  1. The torque limiter can now be placed back into the power train. Recheck all mechanical connections.
